Zwarte Cross in the east part, it's not only music but also theatre, a fair and most of all motor cross races. One of the biggest festivals in the Countre
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

And of course, Høken!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Jan Turkenburg:

hahahaha, yes!
Avatar 12:17pm
David in California:

Thank you, Jan. The large gears on the sides of the stage reminded me of the scene in Modern Times when Chaplin is inside the machine.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Jan Turkenburg:

(for those of you that have forgotten: Høken = having fun with titties and beer in the east part of The NL)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
MHLee:

Hi everyone! I'm personally optimistic that this nationalist posturing will not heat up past the proxy conflict... but what do I know about Russia?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

that's a good description indeedy. And of course some broomers kiek'n. (looking at mopeds with the intention to have some nookie)
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Brommers kiek'n. Sorry.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

@ MHLee: I also think that it won't escalate that far. It might get a little nasty but no world war.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Well, MHLee even Russia experts overhere don't know for sure what Putin's up to, it could get very ugly, but WW3 is not likely at this stage.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Jan Turkenburg:

But my mind has an automatic worst case scenario generator, that sometimes goes into overdrive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm

This is very pleasant
Avatar 12:25pm

Boris is on the case... he's more than capable of averting an international disaster
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, he has to remain on the case for the rest of his life. He can't (and won't) retire. That's the scary part.
Avatar 12:27pm
worldsworstrecords:

(That was an example of British sarcasm, BTW!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm

At least Putin is someone more Machiavelli than Dubya...

Avatar 12:47pm
David in California:

Jan, was surf music popular in the Netherlands?
Avatar 12:47pm
Mr Fab:

I’m dancing with you, Jan!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, I guess it was David, but The Fouryo's didn't do the genre any justice... Jan and Dean and The Beach Boys were pretty popular here.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

It is a kind of shame that nowadays girls with names like Ans and Greetje never would make songs under their own name. Even moreso, the names are almost extinct...
Avatar 12:50pm
David in California:

Thank you, Jan.
Avatar 12:51pm
worldsworstrecords:

Oh, this has Joe Meek written all over it
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Jan Turkenburg:

and there was guitar rock like this, with The Tielman Brothers and The Jumping Jewels as the biggest groups here
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

It might have been recorded in Meek's bathtub.
Avatar 12:53pm
worldsworstrecords:

easily!
Avatar 12:53pm
Mr Fab:

Hasn’t that been the case for a while, PK? There was a stealth Dutch Invasion because us Americans had no idea that Shocking Blue, George Baker Selection, Mouth and MacNeil, etc were from the Netherlands because they all went by Anglo/American names.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Mouth and McNeal were known in the US?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

But Mariska Veres was just Mariska Veres and not Miss Mariss.
Avatar 12:58pm
Mr Fab:

“how do you do” was huge, Jan! I loved it as a kid. I had it on a K-Tel compilation.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Lots of Dutch bands still have English names. But my point was that names like Ans, Trees, Truus and Greetje are almost extinct. People call their daughters things like Hadewijch and Mariken (very middle ages) but no polder names any more...
Avatar 1:02pm
worldsworstrecords:

Hadewijch, short for 'Ham Sandwich'
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

It apparently already is old-fashioned again. Hadewijch is like Hedvig.

Great song. Smashmouth did a cover with a scooby-doo style music video irc
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:12pm

Still prefer The Hollies though..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
MHLee:

I found a blog claiming Kayak the best rock band in the world a few weeks ago
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Jan Turkenburg:

They really were good back in the days, but the best.... ?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I don't like the resurrected version of Kayak very much though
Avatar 1:23pm
worldsworstrecords:

Do you know if the cover to the second Kayak Lp (also known as Alibi, used on the Wintertime sleeve in the GIF) is by Hipgnosis? Sensing big vibes
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Jan Turkenburg:

But there is a connection to Zwolle. Local singer Cindy Oudshoorn was their lead singer for a few years
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I would have to look that up, Darryl
Avatar 1:27pm
worldsworstrecords:

Just had a quick look on Discogs...
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I only have it on CD and there are no credits for the artwork on it
Avatar 1:30pm
David in California:

I wish Bobby Goldsboro was known for writing this "It's Too Late" instead of for singing "Honey".
Avatar 1:31pm

In my house he's known for singing A Butterfly For Bucky...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
MHLee:

pleasekillme.com... nice profile of Mariska
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Jan Turkenburg:

good one, thanks MHLee
Avatar 1:33pm
David in California:

Darryl, I'll have to listen to that one.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I think 'thunderstorm' would be the English word for 'onweer'. Bliksem is our word for lightning
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Jan Turkenburg:

'thunder' is 'donder' in Dutch
Avatar 1:34pm
worldsworstrecords:

You'll need to keep a bucket handy, DinC
Avatar 1:35pm
worldsworstrecords:

A (sick) Bucket for Bucky
Avatar 1:38pm
David in California:

Darryl, I survived "Summer (The First Time)", so I'm a hardened Bobby listener.
Avatar 1:40pm
worldsworstrecords:

hahaha! There's so much drek in that particular back catalogue... See the Funny Little Clown is another horror!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
MHLee:

Nearly as bad as some the sanguine hits of Joe Meek
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Jan Turkenburg:

"drek" is a Dutch word meaning mud or dung
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
MHLee:

There one called "your my little doo-doo-doo" or some similar nonsense with childlike vocals
Avatar 1:42pm
worldsworstrecords:

It fits perfectly, Jan :-)
Avatar 1:42pm
worldsworstrecords:

yay! Beatlecover! It's the Jam!!!
Avatar 1:43pm
David in California:

And of course there's "Watching Scotty Grow".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm
MHLee:

@Jan I'm sure that's not a coincidental word... I've heard drek before... must be a loanword
Avatar 1:44pm
worldsworstrecords:

Paul McCartney played the solo better though!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Jan Turkenburg:

It's also Slovenian for 'shit', google says
Avatar 1:45pm
