Even in the sixties, though, using HPL's name seems pretty culturally tone deaf (though he was a LOT less part of the cultural landscape then so maybe it just felt edgy-nerdy?). And I'm saying that as someone who has read pretty much every word of his published fiction and poetry.

I got to look at some of his papers in the Hay library (and spent a few senses-disordered nights hanging out at his grave that summer). There are some very interesting authors publishing cosmic-horror SF right now who are actively decolonizing Lovecraft and the Lovecraft story. I have been enjoying a few of them a lot. I mean, I will always treasure a lot of his writing, but as you say, the Big Issues are there and need to be confronted honestly. I've played in ONE really satisfying Call of Cthulhu game. It's a tough one to run. It's all split-up-the-party action!

These are records by artists who always seemed to end up in the "cut-out" bin at record shops. I have almost the entire catalog of bands like HP Lovecraft, Orpheus, Ultimate Spinach, Earth Opera, Tracy Nelson and Mother Earrh, Spanky and Our Gang, Rotary Connection et al. These bands are all worthy of our attention, but somehow got shoved to the back of the bus. Oh well, that's the record biz for you!
