A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I'm reading this totally nutty French novel from the early fifties called /The Opposing Shore/. I don't think I have ever encountered prose quite like this. Almost Lovecraftianly purple but in the service of a plot that's almost suspended in amber. There are some passages in it that I have to read three times just to verify, whoa, you DID that?! It's very good. Translated by Richard Howard.

Birds. I wanted to thank you for arranging the birding outing a few weeks back — we ended up way ahead of the group with our kids but the whole experience was great. At times the surrounding birdsong drowned out all other sound. I wonder if you share my opinion that the sounds of nature — especially birdsong — informed our original human understanding of and urge to create music. I think about the vast aural backdrop before the cognitive dawn of man, and how things "sound right" or "make sense" to us musically as a species because of it.

I got about 100 pages in, and one day some kids were fooling around the transformer and switched it off and on, sending a surge that fried my computer. OF COURSE I didn't have it backed up. the neighbors halfway down my street described my high school era first punk band as "sounds like a broken washing machine." obviously, i took that as a compliment.

I saw the future of eLearning right away -- canned courseware that eliminates the need for faculty; just hire an underpaid adjunct to hold virtual office hours. Of course regents love it!

@prof.fuzz A band in Florida used to have the neighbor across the street call the cops on them while practicing. Years later their H3 tour bus parked in the driveway to pick them up. Must have been so cool to rub it in their faces!

e-learning: I got one of my best part time teaching art jobs a few months before the pandemic. A renown institution in new york that must not be named. since the pandemic started, they've transitioned to "elearning" in some awful jargony way and it is such a shame. All those students that won't have connections with REAL LIVE ARTISTS /TEACHERS/PEOPLE now... can only watch famous ones via video. Just adding more videos to regular teacher's to-do lists.

Trouble- re exit Thru the gift shop- totally brilliant film, that exposes how the art market is manufactured, and totally blurs the lines of what is real/documentary.
I’m still questioning aspect and intentions of that film and have even encountered the two makers of the film.
Theirry showed up at an installation I was building with my partner and friends, in ‘07, he was truly annoying with the camera, always filming. So I don’t doubt that aspect of his character. The brainwash character always seemed like a put on

@Andrea: i've been in-classroom this whole academic year, but over half of my students have opted to listen in to real-time audio feed that I'm required to provide to students who have the plague (or otherwise don't want to come to class). it's been exhausting. even worse than the previous year which was fully remote.

i just need lady gaga to record this particular song about a panda so i can retire from teaching...

@prof.fuzz: I've heard that this year have been the worst for teachers, even worse than before. I feel for you! I used to work with teachers all the time and know how almost impossible it already is. I am a teaching artist, and really committed to nyc kids. i used to work at 3-4 schools a week (in school mostly, and after some) and that is just impossible now- that would mean exposure to like 250 kids a week. i'm worried about the future of this work, and know the kids need us more than ever. trying to be hopeful and flexible, and knowing that everything is better if I expect LOTS of wiggle room and imperfection! And I'm finding freedom in being less perfectionist/weirder with my students.

Hey good Troubled folks and Trouble herself. Been listening in background this morning while dealing with all manner of stuff: from two night late nights in a row with a dear friend from abroad who’s here for a week, to a kind of convoluted request from a booking agent for a private show in FLA in Nov, to thinking throughout the day of a former bass player friend who’s struggling in the hospital with Covid (has long-standing other complications). On top of which both kids are sick.
Man, I’m sapped like I haven’t been in a long time.
All this Stevie is rejuvenating.
Mind-blowing that he’s playing everything on “Too High.” How can one be that insanely talented? Shuggie Otis was pretty great in that respect too. But Stevie is and will always be in a class by himself.
Gotta go kick around a ball with the kids who have that energy they find when starting to feel a bit better…

Another birthday to celebrate is Karen Pryor, who is 90 today. She pioneered bringing clicker training to dogs and other animals, improving the welfare of countless sentient beings (including some humans) over the past several decades. Every good trainer has read this book, but it’s not a training manual and is in fact written accessibly for anyone who has pets — any animal — and has ever wondered about their behavior and how we can support it, modify it, celebrate it, etc. Highest possible recommendation for interested peoples:
