I saw Les Filles de Illighadad this week. When they walked down the street to the venue just before the show, people started clapping. They lingered a bit in the street after the show, signing stuff and chatting, and got another round of applause as they left

Abby - Aja, as in asia

Abbie , am trying to listen but is there any chance you can stop the high-pitched hysterical screeching ? it's difficult to continue to listen when you cant seem to control it ..... am a very long-term listener, from uk .... you're ok when you're just talking , the excitability is very much going to make me leave ....

I had to Google that expression.
I can understand roast, but footy?

Abbie- the line of demarcation for good to great vs bad to horrible Steely Dan songs is the year 1977.
  3:43am
dano59:

Aja was a very slick pop album… I like slightly earlier Dan. Still jazzy, and they do like their Cuban rhythms, but also rock’n’roll (with horns or guitars). Memorable, song-alongable lyrics.
… there’s a reason pop music is popular!

to wit:
My Old School
Home at Last
Night By Night (Joe Jackson covered in 2019)
The Royal Scam (the title track)
Dirty Work.

My ex was a big fan since college;
  3:45am
Noodles:

Steely Dan have some wonderful songs, and a lot of songs that are just kind of there. I like a lot of the guitar playing. A pretty solid song with great guitar playing, I think, is "Kings".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47am
happymaan:

My wife had a boyfriend who was a BIG Steely Dan fan, so she's totally fine with me not listening to them.

I'm done with work till more footage comes in, time to go in my dark corner.

She and I discussed this recently. She had once said there was a real intriguing streak of bizarre and perverse behavior in many of the songs.
What prompted our talk: gave her a copy of the Me, Myself & Irene soundtrack that my friend had found at a Salvo & disliked, discovering he didn’t like covers of Steely Dan as much as he didn’t like Steely Dan.
My take is people can be snobs about this stuff.
I hope this helps.

  3:55am
Itamar:

@Abbie from Mars Everything! You'd love her. She had a duet with Nick Cave called "Shivers", they are a match from hell but in a good way 🙃.
You should also try out the album "imballance" on youtube.
We have aaaa-lot-of-wicked-spacey-ambiental-kickass music in Israel, but up to now I only heard noga erez played on this station 🥴
  3:58am
dano59:

Also they had a rep as studio perfectionists and didn’t tour. At least not in earnest, until 1993. I remember hearing a live “Boddhisatva” as a ‘70s B-side on a jukebox and really loving it. It’s maybe their rockingest number.
I had Aja on 8-track, and Can’t Buy a Thrill was a fave LP among friends when I was 13.
I tried to call in … but these are the high points
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58am
Ciggy:

Google says "roast" (in football / soccer terms) Is used when a player continuously beats another defender.
Well, enjoy the match.
As you know, The winner of this match will pit them in Grouo B along with Iran, my USA and the overrated / over confident England.

Itamar:

@Ciggy oh come on, name one american footballer who had a positive year in europe.

timinoak:

Hello Abbie From Mars! Congratulations on your upcoming album release!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07am
Ciggy:

Mckinney?
  4:09am
Itamar:

@dano59 just for random knowledge, it is commonly perceived that Steely Dan had a larger and a more direct influence than the Beatles (or any other band) on the most popular and acclaimed musicians in Israel in the 70's-80's.
  4:10am
dano59:

People also actively dislike the Bee Gees, and ELO. To me these people are philistines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10am
Ciggy:

Look I know tournament play is far different than league play. But wouldn't it be refreshing if England played like they do in the EPL?
  4:11am
dano59:

@Itamar name a few of those influenced and i'll look into em
  4:13am
Itamar:

@Ciggy I really rate this guy but he did not have a good season.
In tournament play I think it comes down mostly to home pressure and mentality, that's probably England's biggest problem.
  4:16am

Probably Abbie. DuckDuckGo is safer than Google, Yahoo! et al.

I can relate to what @Cee Portslade said @3:30 and Praya too, but I like the music so much that I keep listening despite the clipping misophonia. Also we listeners probably deserve the extreme abuse, because the other DJs are all too nice these days and *somebody* needs to fill that role of cruelty to us gross filthy hippies who tune in to FMU.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28am
Abbie from Mars:

Hahaha, the clipping complaint reminds me of this show I was at with Saltzshaker and Olivia -- some very polished sounding indie rock band accidentally triggered some feedback and they all winced -- meanwhile, Saltzshaker was like "imagine being uncomfortable with feedback!!"
Avatar 4:29am
_Ike_:

Though you *could* do what Todd-a-phonic used to do when he yelled a lot and stand back from the mic while yelling… but OTOH, we don’t deserve such leniency since we are grodey punk-ass weasel fools.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32am
fred:

@Abbie: Time for my commute... Thanks for the fantastic shows (my odds of being up 6-9am on Sundays are not good)
  4:32am
Itamar:

@dano59 I think it really came down to, as you said, their studio perfectionalism. Their records were often played in studios in an attempt to emulate their sound, as they were sonically among the best, if not the. I also believe that since most of the Israeli musicians from that period came from homes with classical music backgrounds, which complied with steely dan's more refined and structuralized style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33am
Ciggy:

@_Ike_ which one of us are we:
grodey punk-ass weasel fools.
