@WR! THESE ARE ALL VINYL VERSIONS YES AND I PLAYED THEM IN THE PAST YES (but was ripping them to FLAC while doing so and it is, admittedly, the mere FLAC file memories of those "ripping times" that we are hearing tonight)

Dr. Jazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
doctorjazz:

One of these days will set up a good system to rip vinyl to FLAC (have an A-D converter, but the process is SUCH a pain I've only done it less than 5 times).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Gary:

I'm "lucky" in that the setup to rip vinyl is not terribly different than the setup to broadcast the show, so I already had all the pieces together. But yes it happens in real time and if the kids next door decide to FREAK OUT ON SUGAR then I'm fucked
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm

TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Gary:

@WR: Yes, but I'm thinking of the youth market of today, which seems almost exclusively 12" 33-1/3 RPM LPs
  7:28pm
peter:

we did try to go the "educational" route (tell them how to flip the switch from 33/45), but there was a big overlap with suitcase-turntable users in that demographic, and those can hardly handle spinning a 12 inch at 45 rpm, so..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Gary:

Which is amazing if you think about it, given that music experience for that market outside of vinyl is mp3s and playlists on S***ify

Not to get overly serious, but the Dall-E results are typical of any kind of unusual combination. It can do bodegas; it can do listening to records; however, it doesn't understand that the picture should involve a bodega and not a record store. Instead, it produces kind of an average of both. But the customers are very accurate!

I have to return to real life now, but very enjoyable show, Gary. You can mess it up all you want now, because I won't be able to hear. Thanks!

Omar Khorshid now plays w/ Alan Bishop (I believe, not sir richard?) in cairo....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm

I wish, NGH! Unfortunately, he died a few days after returning to Egypt from this concert in a car crash
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm

That said, I wonder who the guitarist is that is playing with Alan Bishop ...?

Always fun to recognize a song that I previously only knew from a 3 Mustaphas 3 cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
Gary:

Ranjit! I do not know the 3 Mustaphas 3 version ... please divulge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Gary:

Okay, two more sides to choose from. Know this about them: Malian funk is FIRE HOT OUCH OUCH DANCE YER ASS OFF B/C YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO SIT STILL PLUS FIRE SO. Whereas Japanese DIY is SUPER COOL SOUNDS GOSH JUST HANGING OUT AT HOME WITH FRIENDS MAKIN TRACKS THEY ARE GHOSTLY AND SWEET AND A BIT "OFF" SOUNDING AND ALSO YOU SHOULD KNOW COMPILED BY A MEMBER OF THE TENNIS COATS

i was torn between malian funk and japanese diy, so i'm gonna cast a vote for japan now just so it doesn't feel lonely. either way is fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
Gary:

I honestly think it could screw up the sequence vibe to go with Japanese DIY after this -- it was originally meant for last to kind of bring us down and gentle so that we could go back to our before-the-party lives w/out significant injury to our sensibilities

It's too late to go back to before-the-party life this evening. The nipple has been freed! And believe me, the crackers where I live have been unleashed since 2016
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm

"I'm unleash muh crackers" has got to be a new catch-phrase you can fling along with big-of-flair

i was going to guess mid-70s but i thought the drums sounded like newer production...in any case i was almost correct -1978 on that le tioko tioko album

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm

it sound fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm

and by "newer sounding drums" i mean newer for an african recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Zipperhead7:

I've often wondered if the African kid choruses are recruited at schools or if the musicians recruit friends and relatives. They obviously are well rehearsed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Gary:

"‘Le Tioko-Tioko' is one of the rarest vinyl albums from the already scarce Malian vinyl discography, partly as the album was never released commercially, only independently distributed via the Malian Association for the Blind in Bamako. Though recorded at Radio Mali under the aegis of master engineer Boubacar Traoré; the album was originally released in East Germany. The tapes had been taken by some Malian students to East Berlin as part of a student exchange program. It was then manufactured and released on the East German state-owned label Eterna with only a few boxes of records being shipped back to Bamako." --Mr Bongo

Zipperhead, good question.
both?
...i'd bet mostly family and friends though. and i think learning new songs is easy for them, with music being such a big part of most african cultures (all except the ones oppressed by shithead governments)

Please feel free to stop by the bodega anytime even if you're not going to buy anything and I don't mean that passive-aggressively b/c I am upset that you didn't even buy a candy bar or some gum (twenty five cents would kill you?), no, I mean it very sincerely!
