This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

This is new to me. Walter (now) always intuited the best way to meld the new science with workable existing musics, in ways that brought out new things to hear in the the original and the new. Synthesis is more ways than one.

wrong way round re: Walter / Wendy. she transitioned circa '68 or so and went public in '79
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm
StringOFperils:

Oh , true...what am I saying? It's this hot humid fetid swamp of an evening on this end. I've been stunned all day. The gamelan is perfect. All I need now is lizards on the walls.
Avatar 8:09pm
Flash Strap:

yeah totally agree - interestingly, the album before this one (Digital Moonscapes) is easily my least favorite, but in hindsight it's clear she was building up to this, a majestic experiment in alternate tunings using digital synths
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
StringOFperils:

The pure tones and harmonics of real gamelan bowls carry over well into the synthetic world
Avatar 8:14pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, shockingly well! she put so much care into those tones too
Avatar 8:15pm
Flash Strap:

Cybe also does a sort of synth gamelan, there are a few others too. but Wendy's is so uniquely rigorous

Jeff Golick turned me on to Ken Hyder, from the very moment he did I've been obsessed. a true musical gift from a maestro
Avatar 8:28pm
Flash Strap:

when i saw this LP sitting in the shop i snatched it up as though there'd be competition for it (there was none, no one had heard of it). a treasure! truly scottish free jazz, there's just nothing else like it
Avatar 8:29pm
Flash Strap:

this suite "Inspired by Ken Hyder's conviction that Scottish bagpipe playing originally involved improvisation"
Avatar 8:33pm
Flash Strap:

the other side of Land of Stone has considerably more vocal technique on display which is really wild and wonderful. all killer this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
StringOFperils:

If Rahsaan could employ an air bladder, then a Scot can infuse native improv with jazz
Avatar 8:36pm
Flash Strap:

god Rahsaan could employ just about anything and it'd be magic, generally 2-at-a-time magic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
StringOFperils:

Magic is the word
Avatar 8:38pm
Flash Strap:

also brings to mind Rufus Harley of course, but he often seems more concerned with making bagpipe "fit" into a jazz ensemble than using it to expand the actual form of the piece... though I think Re-Creation of the Gods does start to get there, among some of his other odd works
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

What I wonder about is how the intervals of notes in the fingering of the stops on bagpipes might lend themselves to Jazz - or not. Of course - Jazz is so much about taking instruments & expanding their capabilities for lack of better words... Same for how their reeds work with drones - &tc. I always think if them as kind of like Organs - rightly or wrongly... One isn't using breath control whatsoever - rather the bladder... Have a friend who's quite accomplished with Irish Pipes for Trad playing - & I know he kind of bends notes - just *I guess* with subtleties in how the fingers partially / gradually cover the stops...
