Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

@UM--ooOooh. Was it related to your biking accident? I have a plate in my left arm from a bad break from a bike spill. In fact, I realized at one point that all of the broken bones (5) I've had are all from biking, starting when I was 5 @). I hope you have a speedy recovery!

Mr. Oxford:

Was not expecting Indian classical music. Pleasant surprise.
  1:07pm
Marie:

Glad you survived the incident, UM! Dave, this show is like totally super duper cosmically healing. I feel a definite vibage uplift, fer real.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
Dave Sewelson:

Ya never know what's gonna happen next around here.......
  1:10pm
Mr. Oxford:

the album title 'Shadi Ki Shehnai' means Shehnai (the wind instrument being played) in Marriages. This is basically music that is played during marriage ceremonies in Northern India.
  1:10pm
Mr. Oxford:

Or at least it used to be played in marriages many decades ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
Dave Sewelson:

Thanks Mr. Oxford.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
StringOFperils:

I've never heard the shehnai played this well, I don't think. Only in loud public religious festival settings...his control of tone is almost like Armenian duduk in places. It's really beautiful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
Dave Sewelson:

Bismallah Khan was the baddest...heard him at Town Hall....blew my mind....
  1:15pm
Mr. Oxford:

@Sop, He was a world-class maestro of Shehnai, perhaps the most well known Shehnai player. He was also one of the most celebrated classical musicians in India.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
StringOFperils:

I certainly do hear it, Mr. O. I think I'll seek him out in a record store I know In Little India, a few miles east of here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
doctorjazz:

Had to step away for a bit, just caught up with comments.

Had a bunch of bike injury/fractures myself, starting at age 13 (hit by a car), and an elbow fracture and finger fracture as a biking adult (who's crazy idea was it to take up mountain biking...?)
  1:19pm
Mr. Oxford:

I just caught up with some of the earlier chat too...Hope you get better soon Uncle Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Phillippe:

@docjazz I used to mountain bike years ago and our saying when we finished went along the lines of "if you're bleeding somewhere, then it's been a good day!" Then one day I leaned into a sapling when I went around a turn too fast, caught my forearm on a nub where the tree had just been pruned, and opened a 4 inch gash. We did a little field repair on it, but it swelled so much our only bandage started cutting off the circulation to my hand so I had to ride around with an open wound until we got out of the woods. We stop using that saying after that.
Avatar 1:25pm
Jeff Moore:

Reading a bit about the shehnai, I ran across a reference to that instrument being part of the class of instruments called aerophones. I'd never seen that word or heard of that extremely broad class of instruments (said class including, as I'm sure the better informed among us than me have long known, the saxomophones our host blows).

Aerophone. Sounds a little bit archaic, like aerodrome.

And clearly I like that lexicological family, because visitors to our home are likely to have sipped the cocktail I call, yes, the Aerodrome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
StringOFperils:

Aerophone seems better appended to politicians: something that employs air to make noise
  1:27pm
Mr. Oxford:

Thank you Dave for playing this. You reminded me of my culture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm

From Raag to Boogie Woogie, just the way (some) jazz historians say it happened...
