Hello, all! Today's playlist pic is of and by English outsider artist/spiritualist Madge Gill.

Hey, Tony! Madge looks like she's seen a ghost.

Carmichael:

Heya Tony. That art piece looks a bit influenced by Terry Gilliam.
Avatar 12:37pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, Carmichael!
Avatar 12:40pm
Tony Coulter:

The artist (Madge Gill) died in 1961, and that piece was likely done before Gilliam was born ... so, if anything, the influence went the other way.

Love this Uncertain by Clock DVA.

  12:46pm
Dean:

I believe Harold Bloom at least once hypothesized that "anxiety of influence," his trademark theory about how strong poets address their great precursors, can work reverse chronologically. Thus, Shakespeare was a source of anxiety for Chaucer, Milton for Shakespeare, etc.
Avatar 12:48pm
arb:

hi! loving it today
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Dean! My first job was working for Harold Bloom (as a lowly peon).
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Hi, Arb! Glad you're liking it!
  12:50pm
Dean:

Holy mackeral, what?! The very same?! I adore his early work up through The Western Canon. He was a force of nature, no question.
  12:52pm
David in London:

Hello Tony and all assembled Coultards.

Oh bugger, I got delayed and missed the start of the program. Thanks Tony, really appreciate the spinage.
Avatar 12:54pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Well, I worked for a press he founded (Chelsea House). He interviewed me when I applied for the job, but I barely ever saw him again. I certainly didn't sit around discussing the anxiety of influence with him.
Avatar 12:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Hi, David! Sorry you missed yourself! Thanks for the great music, tho.
  12:56pm
Dean:

Ah, yes, Chelsea House, which published a vast series of study aids for literature students, many (all?) attributed to Bloom. That seems unlikely, but frankly, he was so prolific that it also in a way seems plausible. As when I brag about having attended every Grateful Dead concert there is always somebody who entertains the possibility, because Deadheads are that devoted.
Avatar 12:57pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, his name was on the spines of those things, but other people (including me) did most of the actual writing.
  12:59pm
Dean:

And to think I was so often tempted to purchase them. Ultimately I didn't, but I might have grabbed a Coulter opus without knowing it.
Avatar 1:11pm
Tony Coulter:

I, of course, listened to Yes as a teenager, but, perhaps weirdly, hearing this track on the "Buffalo 66" soundtrack is what got me listening to them again.

My Vibing Up the Senile Man story. In 1979 I was working in a record store with my best friend. His father was a hilarious, charismatic trickster, a theater professor with Einstein-like hair and a goatee. He visited the store when his son and I were on there. He spied the ATV album, picked up a copy, and walked to the register with it stating, "I'll take a dozen of these."
