Slug, when my daughter was about 12 she took me to a Stax 50th anniversary concert at Hollywood Bowl for my birthday. Isaac Hayes headlined. During his set she turned to me and said, "Dad, this is bad". I said, "I know, but it's Isaac Hayes". She said, "But it's bad" and I reiterated.

Several years later, maybe after he had passed away, she said to me with excitement, "Dad, we saw ISAAC HAYES!"

As that Hayes song was playing I was wondering just that. What it must have been like to be the epitome of COOL. Does it come with some kind of strings attached? Or are there no strings when you're THAT COOL?

Franco Twinkie:

Okay, I was going to keep my mouth shut, but the topic deserves more clarification. My father bought our house in 1975 as a fixer-upper. It was just a shack really. We, started sprucing it up to rent, but it was really a wreck. It needed a lot of work. I lived in Pasadena and would meet my dad at the house about 8:00AM. For a short period of time I would encounter Isaac Hayes driving his girlfriend to work at the nail salon up the street. He drove a blue Cadillac with a white top. It had personal plates that said MR.HAYES. He was always slumped against the door doing the gangster lean. This went on every morning for about six months, and then I never saw him again.
