"The Great Learning was one of British composer Cornelius Cardew's most important works, a series of seven "paragraphs" with text from the writings of Confucius and scored for generally large numbers of both trained and untrained performers. The original productions of this piece, in fact, served as the genesis of the legendary pro-amateur Scratch Orchestra.... "Paragraph 2" [is] an exercise in the inevitability and value of failure. The chorus is required to attempt to valiantly surmount the raging drums and to do so over a long period of time, an idea based on the Buddhist method of practicing chanting in front of a roaring waterfall; they will fail in making themselves clearly heard but something valuable may be learned in the process. Little by little, due to sheer physical exhaustion, the singers subside while the drums, gathering rhythmic cohesion, go on and on."

my favorite piece of his. these days he's almost better known for his Maoist / "Stockhausen Serves Imperialism" period, which I respect in theory but yielded frequently rather uninteresting recordings. also did a lot with AMM. Very cool & interesting person, sadly killed by a hit & run driver in the early 80s

"Olson lll was composed in Stockholm Sweden in April of 1967. Composer Folke Rabe had arranged for this work to be commissioned by the Royal Academy of Music and Sveriges Radio and it was written for young musicians at the community music school in Nacka Sweden, a suburb of Stockholm. It is based on a miniature cyclic poem "begin to think about how we are to be to."

It was written 3 years after In C with the intent of using hard core repetition as a form of ritual. It was a step toward a more primal form using only one note value to deliver its raw blatant energy.

The premiere caused a scandal and the music director at school resigned in protest against its performance shortly after the premiere."

The Confucian angle was interesting - as one most hears that Buddhism & Taoism are the Mystical handles on long Chinese Culture - & Confucius was about Social Order & Conservatism in that sense. Perhaps the attendant endurances relate to that in some manner.

Such a simple score, sort of. The time-signature changes every few bars though. You'd have to concentrate to not lose it as you were singing, with different groups coming in at different times. It's like a woven carpet of sound.

there should be a big collection of their stuff, it wouldn't even require that big a box set. BUT there's a great collection of some of the dubs called Freedom Sounds in Dub, and Prince Alla and Rod Taylor both have comps (which cover a lot of their FS output). if you can find a download of Earl Zero's Only Jah that's crucial as well
