Many of the best 70's films were more about character than plot. There was that brief time when Hollywood studios backed lower budget films like Cisco Pike, mostly because so many big studios lost money on blockbusters and were desperate to cash in on the trend started by Easy Rider.

Same here. My age hindered my introduction to that period of film. I was too young to catch it in theaters, but too old to discover much of it in the era of pay TV and home video. During that "between time", I had to make do with heavily censored versions on commercial broadcast TV.

I just watched a not-great Kristofferson film called Songwriter. There were some funny bits with Willie nelson and Rip Torn, and some of the solo nelson songs were great, but there were too many mediocre Kristofferson tunes, where he was going for more of a stadium country rock vibe. Director Alan Rudolph was going for a 70's vibe, a little Altmanesque, but didn't pull it off. Worth seeing as a curiosity.
