Les Excentriques  Je Veux Je Veux   Favoriting Je Veux Je Veux/ J'etais Parti 7"  RCA Victor    It's rare I buy a record for the cover alone, but this one had to be had. Les Excentriques were best known for their ALL PINK ensembles, guitars...and pink coiffed hair. The band started in 1963 as the Golden Marks. Subsequently in 1964, the group and their manager decided to bet on a new "look", with aforementioned pink hair and clothes. Best known for their covers of Beach Boys songs, they had a good run on the circuit until they disbanded in 1966.    0:08:32 (Pop-up)
Les Pommes De Lune  Une Fleur   Favoriting Premiere Transmission 7"  The Hypnotic Bridge Record Co  2022  Scouring the halls of rarities, Les Pommes de Lune stumbled across ‘Une Fluer’, a tune originally issued in 1967 by French actress and singer Christine Delaroche and decided to record their own version. Crawling with rainbow melodies, sparkling orchestration and a harmonious feel altogether, the long lost track oozes with Summer Of Love sensibilities. The B side is a fantastic cover of Status Quo's Pictures of Matchstick Men. Also a delight to realize that Gaven Dianda, of the wonderful band More Plastic is part of this group!    0:10:59 (Pop-up)

Public Body  Way, No Way   Favoriting Big Mess  Fat Cat  2023  "Public Body have released a new track ‘Way, No Way’. It’s the third track to be unveiled from their upcoming debut album ‘Big Mess’, out 9th June via FatCat Records. //// The track, according to frontman Seb Gilmore, was inspired by Friends: “I wrote ‘Way, No Way’ when I was isolating with Covid for the first time,” he says. //// “I decided to rewatch Friends, and cringed out at how tragic the men are. Being stuck at home reminded me of when I was younger living in a rural area with no transport links. Back then I also stayed home and binge watched TV and as result of my lack of movement, got really fat. The song title is actually the name of Ross and Chandler’s high school band. I thought it was a killer name so robbed it” //// According to Gilmore, the album is also “self-deprecating which is a tad embarrassing because I should probably just sort my life out rather than write a 10-song album about it!”" Public Body (Bandcamp)  *   0:23:48 (Pop-up)

Released April 18, 2023. --- "A month on from the release of White Van, Lambrini Girls have dropped another scathing new single. //// Entitled Lads Lads Lads, the track is taken from the duo’s upcoming debut EP You’re Welcome, which is due out on May 19 via Big Scary Monsters. //// They say of the song: “In order to be a lad, make sure to follow the following guidelines: excessive drinking, harassing anyone with a pulse and starting fights. Most importantly, make sure to never talk about your feelings as this simply cannot be associated with manliness. Lad culture is the shit stain on the bathroom floor and toxic masculinity is the toilet paper that refuses to unstick from the shoe of society. Nobody wins.”"  *   0:33:19 (Pop-up)

TEKE::TEKE  Doppelganger   Favoriting Hagata  Kill Rock Stars  2023  Released in advance of a full-length due out June 9, 2023. This is the third digital advance single, released last week on May 4. Hagata lands on June 9 via Kill Rock Stars. It follows the band's 2021 debut Shirushi. Words from our national broadcaster: "'Montreal band Teke::Teke often takes familiar sounds and puts a spin on them; their music evokes nostalgia, but always filters it through a modern lens. That's the case with their latest single, "Doppelganger," takes inspiration from '60s Okinawan music and then adds elements of '70s Japanese pop ballads and '60s French pop à la Serge Gainsbourg. Its lyrics, by singer Maya Kuroki, tell the story of parallel lives, which is something the band's members resonated with, with member Sei Nakauchi Pelletier saying in a statement: "Being of mixed Japanese and French-Canadian culture, I always feel like in some way I'm living two parallel lives… a big part of me is here in Canada, obviously, but another part of me is on the other side of the planet… this could be said about most of us in this band." While there aren't many bands that sound exactly like Teke::Teke, their search for identity and belonging in the world is something that listeners all over the world can connect to." Kill Rock Stars

2023

Released in advance of a full-length due out June 9, 2023. This lead-off single "is a protest song from the perspective of garbage." Here's a writeup from Exclaim! magazine by Megan LaPierre, published Feb 28, 2023... "TEKE::TEKE are back::back! The Montreal psych-rock septet have returned with news of their sophomore record, led by new single "Garakuta." Hagata lands on June 9 via Kill Rock Stars. It follows the band's 2021 debut Shirushi. "'Hagata' is a very deep word, something present but also something leftover from someone or something no longer there," vocalist Maya Kuroki explained in a press release. "It's like waking up from a dream, or being connected to the other side of something." The album was recorded in Mountain Dale, NY, with producer Daniel Schlett (The War on Drugs, DIIV, CHAI, Nick Hakim). Named after the Japanese term for goods no longer considered useful, lead single "Garakuta" serves as an energetic battle cry from the perspective of garbage. "I wanted it to sound like a big protest song from the point of view of the so-called trash, the garbage, as if they were living things, rallying and rebelling against us, humans," Kuroki told Consequence. "I started thinking that it could also be an analogy for anyone who's being cast out of society for being considered 'useless' or just different." Juxtaposing smutty guitar riffs and the pervasive presence of a fanciful flute, the song feels both grounded in the junkyard and able to transcend this dumpster fire into something more hopeful." HOUSE Of ALL  There's More   Favoriting HOUSE Of ALL  Tiny Global Productions  2023  Released April 22, 2023. "House of All features founding Fall guitarist Martin Bramah (guitar and vocals), bassist Stephen Hanley (whose 20 years in the Fall between 1978 and 1998 make him that band’s longest-serving member after Smith), and his drummer brother Paul. Simon Wolstencroft, from the band’s 80s/90s incarnation, completes a two-drummer lineup, along with guitarist Pete Greenway, who spent a decade in the Fall." [The last decade of the band's existence.] //// The upcoming June 2023 issue of "The Wire" magazine will have a fair chunk of it devoted to Mark E Smith, The Fall & Fall related things, including an interview with HOUSE Of ALL: "House Of All: Tessa Norton talks to the new band formed by ex-Fall members about life after Mark E Smith." The Wire Issue 472 //// Additionally, they are playing their first tour in mid-May, with dates in London (May 18), Salford (May 19), Newcastle Upon Tyne (May 22) and Edinburgh (May 23.) //// Regrettably, the tour will not feature Pete Greenway, who made a difficult decision to step away to tend to his health, but "they’re rehearsing with fill-in guitarist Phil Lewis, and by all accounts it sounds . . . stupendous." //// Lastly, "HOUSE Of ALL have finished their (fantastic) second album, which is replete with Pete’s unique brilliance." The Fall  Over! Over!   Favoriting Reformation Post TLC [Deluxe]  Slogan / Narnack / Cherry Red  2007 / 2020  "Reformation Post TLC is the twenty-fifth studio album by the Fall, released in the UK on 12 February 2007. The album features Mark E Smith and his wife, Elena, with newcomers Tim Presley and Rob Barbato (of Darker My Love), Orpheo McCord (of The Hill) and Dave Spurr (of Motherjohn). Presley, Barbato and McCord, all Americans, joined the band as emergency replacements for Ben Pritchard, Spencer Birtwistle and Steve Trafford, all of whom quit the band during an American tour in April 2006. In his 2008 autobiography Smith praised the Americans for revitalizing The Fall, due to their openness to new ideas and not being overly-impressed by influential UK bands (e.g., Oasis and the Stone Roses) that had shaped a generation of young English musicians. Smith said in an interview with Q that the "post-TLC" refers to the band after the "traitors, liars and cunts..." had left." //// This album was also the first to feature Pete Greenway, who would become the guitarist for the last (and longest continuous) lineup of The Fall. //// ""Over! Over!" is a cover of the 1968 track "Coming Down" by the United States of America (not credited) with different lyrics."    1:26:32 (Pop-up)

Produced by David Rubinson, it was released in 1968 by Columbia Records... oseph Byrd, the band's leader, stated that his aesthetic aim for the band and album was to create avant-garde, political rock music; he envisioned that their music would combine electronic sounds (not electronic music), musical and political radicalism, and performance art... Dorothy Moskowitz and Joseph Byrd collaborated as lyricists on the album for most of the songs... Lavender Flu  I Am Not Willing   Favoriting Assorted Promenades  Mind Meld Records  2023  (Moby Grape Cover) Advanced preview of the Oregon band's forthcoming album, courtesy of the label Total Punk. LAVENDER FLU- Assorted Promenades 12" //// We’ve been keeping this one under our hat for nearly two years. On the short list of people, I wanted to work with when the original Mind Meld concept was hatched was Chris Gunn (Lavender Flu/ Hunches). I reached out to the Lavender Flu crew at the time (2019) a few emails were exchanged, but it wasn’t till I moved to Portland in 2020 that this collaboration came to fruition. Sure, the original label idea was to work with people outside the genre or project they were known for but when one of my favorite bands ask me to put out a record, I wasn’t going to let something like self-imposed parameters get in the way. Besides it's not like Lavender Flu exist within tight borders and they completely fit the vibe I’m trying to cultivate here at Mind Meld. I eagerly said yes but asked if they would be cool with forgoing the usual pre-release rigamarole and let this record magically appear on release day. Well now here we are…. //// The new Lavender Flu EP, Assorted Promenades, was started at a point during the pandemic when the band had no practice space and limited options for getting together as a full band. They decided to record a single based around a Moby Grape cover (I am not willing) and spontaneously composed tracks built up on the tape machine. Realizing they had too much material, it morphed into a 12 inch at 45 RPM in the style of the early Flying Nun EPs. By this time they had a space to work in so another cover (Dream Girl by Oscar Mack) was recorded full band style to make a nice long 9 track EP “  *   1:38:02 (Pop-up)

Les Freres Pogo  Le Japonais   Favoriting Nome Noma: Québec Post-Punk Et New Wave 1979-1987  Les Disque Du Tresor Nationale  2020  Originally going by the name of Ral'Bol - Fast Food Musique LFP or simply POGO consisted of Jean Peticlerc and 3 members of the folk group Demi-Heure. They armed themselves with battery powered synths and set out to destroy. Eventually Yama noticed them and invited them to demo their instruments at trade shows and events. They signed to Gamma Records and released only one single...which this song...is not. While we flip the record...a bit of Silicon Teens...Silicon Teens were a British new wave virtual band. The project was the creation of Mute Records founder Daniel Miller. Frank Tovey was the band's fictional frontman. The "group" were publicised as a quartet with members named Darryl, Jacki, Paul and Diane, but in reality these individuals did not exist and for media interviews their parts were played by actors, with the band's lead singer Darryl portrayed by musician Frank Tovey. Tovey did not perform on any Silicon Teens recordings; all vocals and instrumentation were actually provided by Daniel Miller. The project was launched in 1979 with the single "Memphis Tennessee", a cover of the Chuck Berry song. Two other singles followed; these were, along with other tracks, assembled into the 1980 album Music for Parties, a collection mostly comprising rock and roll standards from the 1950s and 1960s, played in an upbeat synthpop style. he album and the singles "Judy in Disguise" and "Just Like Eddie" were top ten hits on the UK Indie Chart in 1980. The "group" ceased activity after 1980, but film director John Hughes was so taken with it that their rendition of "Red River Rock" (in a re-recorded version) can be heard in the film soundtrack of the Steve Martin and John Candy film Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

Also, what I loved about CDs especially was all the extra & bonus content you would get. I bet some things are going to disappear unless you have the actual artifacts. Digital platforms drop rarities after a time. (Licensing? Regional?) And vinyl charges 40, 50, 60 of your currency to give you half as much. W/ much extra shipping & possible customs fees, if you're importing. I mean, vinyl is beautiful, but as in terms of a deep dive, I feel like it is prohibitively expensive.

Better than our dog that lifted his leg on some of my records…

and once my headphones went out for some reason and there was kitty with the cord in his mouth. Mystery solved…

My friend in the U.S. sent me a clip this week from David Letterman's short-lived morning show with Suzanne Ciani demonstrating a Prophet 5 & Vocoder & sequencer. It was pretty interesting, though Dave was typically grouchy :)

Cat with earphones cord in mouth is pretty funny, though. I bet the look on the cat's face was like "Yeah, what? What do you want?"

Typically grouchy? Did someone try to be extra interesting and upstage him? Haha. I do love Letterman, though.

Cats know the things that are taking attention away from them. They must be destroyed at all costs... :)
