The problem with showing up late is that you miss super-important details that come back later in subtle but critical ways that, if you don't pick up on them, makes the music and the DJ mic breaks seem flat, normal, pedestrian

Dean! Have you come to debase the coinage AGAIN?
  9:25pm
Dean:

My story about squiggly writing: I'd stopped handwriting around 8th grade in favor of all-caps block printing (in emulation of my father). Many years later I attended law school and, after graduation, I took the CA bar exam. I decided to take the exam manually rather than with a computer, because the testing services were not fully adept at the new technology. The first question on the exam was a paragraph we had to handwrite, cursive, before proceeding. I freaked out. Fortunately, I knew better to chill, execute my awful handwriting version, and put it all behind me.

In second grade I was in a parochial school, and I had a nun who came in to teach us cursive writing. She told us to cross the t on the little dotted line between the main lines on our paper. Our regular teacher told us (correctly) to cross the t above the line. I pointed out this contradiction to my usual teacher who said, "When you're writing for Sister Margaret, cross the t's on the line, but when you're writing for me, cross the t's above the line." This led me to question the teachings of religion, and I think that this reasoning will stand careful scrutiny decades later.
