speaking of which -- the Cowboy Junkies' version of "Sweet Jane" -- and the video -- TOTALLY defines shoegaze, imho

i was still in school, but had the day off -- so took the train from New Brunswick to get tickets for The Specials; they were supposed to go on sale at 99 -- iirc, there was a huge delay at the printer (!) -- finally, Ruth Polsky arrived with the tickets (i did not know her, but knew who she was)
another time, the ex went to 99 and asked, "what is the weirdest thing you got this week?" and Ed sold him the LUXUS double 45/EP (an Eric Mitchell project -- now, a sought after collector's item -- saw a copy at an exhibit as P.S. 1! -- but, same ex lost it at FMU, when FMU was still at Froeberg Hall grrrr)
we had also run into two of the Buzzcocks at 99 -- we said hello, but we were both broke, not able to buy tickets for their upcoming show (the ex was at SVA while i was as Douglass) -- so Steve Diggle called an assistant over and had him put us on the guest list -- so sweet! (we were both totally floored -- did not expect that at all!)
