My relationship to the music of Joy Division has several sign posts: a good friend who was the imports buyer at Dallas Peaches invited me over to hear something recent. He played their first album for me. I go wow. Great. Do they have anything new? He said, yes, they have a new album that just came out but one thing about that. The singer just committed suicide. I'm like, damn, do I really want to pursue their music further?

WR:

↳ Listener Gregory @7:30
Sorry, LG, I thought you had been informed.

So I went my own way, not pursuing any further. Years later I got interested in film maker Michael Winterbottom and so one of my first Netflix choices was 24 Hour People. Seeing that nudged me to get Amy Curtis's book and whatever CD I could find at Virgin records in Times Square, which was a compilation (this is 2001 or 2002). Then I started getting every live recording I coud find.

I am assuming that the band spent a year studying with the Master Musicians of Jajouka, or else Gary wouldn't be playing them. I can't wait for the set of their music with them.

You say Nazi atrocities, and I reply with an actual headline from my local paper, just proving that organic farming practices will not save us from idiocy:
"Sheriff investigates swastika drawn with carrot"
I refuse to read the article and spoil the headline's purity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm
StringOFperils:

Bowie's West Berlin reference to Warsaw reflected an idea of Eastern Bloc desolation and bleakness. A crumbling Soviet Union, and maybe ideas of evaporating freedom in the West were on people's minds. Ian Curtis' voice embodied disconnection and lonliness. Emptiness. The ghosts of the Warsaw Ghetto haunt Europe to this day...well, that's my closer. Get it? CLOSER. hA HA. So not funny
