November 12, 2023: Charlie From Boston
We celebrate Charlie Mariano's Centennial today. A Magi of Melody, Mariano played alto, soprano, and tenor sax, flute, and the Indian oboe-like Nadaswaram. Follow the sweet sounds you hear pouring through the door, and into the Stork Club for a splendorous Sunday.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:
' Carmine Ugo Mariano (November 12, 1923 – June 16, 2009) was an American jazz saxophonist who focused on the alto and soprano saxophone. He occasionally performed and recorded on flute and nadaswaram as well.Mariano was born in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, the son of Italian immigrants, John (Giovanni) Mariano and Mary (Maria) Di Gironimo of Fallo, Italy. He grew up in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston, enlisting in the Army Air Corps after high school, during World War II. After his service in the Army, Mariano attended what was then known as Schillinger House of Music, now Berklee College of Music. He was among the faculty at Berklee from 1965 to 1971. Mariano moved to Europe in 1971, settling eventually in Köln (Cologne), Germany, with his third wife, the painter Dorothee Zippel Mariano.
He played with one of the Stan Kenton big bands, Toshiko Akiyoshi (his then wife), Charles Mingus, Eberhard Weber, the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, Embryo and numerous other notable bands and musicians.
His unusual application of the nadaswaram, a classical wind instrument from Tamil Nadu, was a notable occasional feature of his work in the 1970s. '

2oz Glen Passaic
4oz pineapple juice, canned
1oz lime juice, fresh
1oz simple syrup
5g liquified propane gas
Combine ingredients in a blender with 1 cup ice, and puree until smooth. Using a length of surgical tubing affixed to the tip of a torch, allow propane to bubble through. Pour into a hurricane glass, garnish with an umbrella, and set afire with a long match.

- Konakkol is like 'Indian Beatboxing' ! My understanding is - when one learns the Tabla Drum in this Music - it is also transmitted Vocally - & you have to be able to articulate it that way as well. I believe there are like five specific syllables corresponding to the Drum sounds... I am not especially Informed here...
