I remember when Mongo Santamaria came down to WFMU in the old East Orange studios in the 1980s. He was a guest on someone's show whose name I can't recall now. I'm sure Doug Schulkind would remember.

Okay, it just occurred to me that the DJ was Montego Joe. If I am recalling correctly, he had a show on WFMU in the early 80s.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm

And I am right!!! Here is a photo of Montego Joe, Sonny Ochs (Phil's sister), and Dan Berhman. I used to follow Sonny on the schedule early on. She's so cool.

Just looked up Mongo - he was born in 1917, so yeah, he was an elder statesmen by the '80s.

Hi Roy and all. Hope you are feeling all healed. Yeah, you were pretty ill I can believe. You accidentally referred to it being Halloween here. I’d be pretty sick too if Geert (Jimmy Page) became a big man in your area.

The Fab fam was in a whirlwind trip to NYC over the holiday. Ate T-Day dinner at a great joint in Times Square area. Too bad not enough to time to visit WFMU like I had hoped.

Nothing fancy. it's called Carmine's. Thanksgiving is one of it's specialties, so it was packed, but good for large family tables.

My family is actually orig from NYC. i was born only a year after the fam moved to LA, so New York is kinda my homeland. Used to visit a lot.

Midtown was a good location - lots to see and do, as it was the first time my daughter had been to NYC. She wanted to see "Little Shop of Horrors" on what I thought would be a free day to visit WFMU. She loved it, so can't complain. And it's fun show.

Roy, oh man, Fruko and band put out a ton of great stuff. May be easier for where you are to get his lps cheaper than here Vampi Soul label ( great label) has reissued some of the earliest Discos Fuentes label stuff. Even these reissues are too rich price wise for my blood. Check out Tesura, Violento, El Barbaro. If you can get it, there’s a great 3 cd set called GOLD, a comp. Don’t be shy about any of the 70s or 80s stuff.

Thanks, this is very helpful. I love Vampi. I bough quite a few compilations when my best friend lived in Barcelona.
  4:20pm
Oleh from Pittsburgh:

Roy, Vampi does a great four for Five dollars ( USD) regularly on Bandcamp. Great releases from Discos Fuentes etc, comps and dedicated performer stuff. Incredible Stuff from Ghana, Colombia, etc. Thing is they’re cds. Fine to me as I just about only buy vinyl in used and thrift stores.

Roy, I also have blue toof in my car. Check out Fruko’s stuff on the free music platform(s) I’d list one of them here, but don’t know if allowed. I’m not in digital. I love having physical media in my hands, but the digital stuff is great for in the car.
