The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

DJ Peter:

Hi Bob & Gina! Just got my "Galaxy A Go-Go!" premium: I couldn't find any info on "His Wife's Habit" at first, except that it starred Georgine Darcy (probably best known as "Miss Torso" in Hitchcock's "Rear Widow"). I eventually discovered it had been re-released as "Women and Bloody Terror."
I think the movie was probably better than this trailer makes it seem... but maybe not that much better...

Like sibilance, inner-groove distortion can be the fault of the cut, not the playback gear. DMM (Direct Metal Master) effectively eliminated inner-groove distortion, but of course it appeared at the end of the LP era, with the introduction of CD making it a moot technology.

I should have got a Technics 1200 instead of the Dual that I got. I replaced the cheap AT cartridge with a Grado and now there's a 60 Hz hum. And you have to sit absolutely still or it skips.

Steely Dan was probably the first to use a computer-controlled cutting head, which also prevented inner-groove distortion. But a less-than-great turntable and cartridge can introduce it with an otherwise perfect pressing.

I agree, I have zero romanticism about vinyl, having suffered with its many flaws for most of my life. But it was not until the mid 90s that I felt that consumer grade d/a converters in cd players were good enough not to suck the soul out of every song.

There's also the simple fact that the inner part of the groove has a smaller radius than the outer part. Which of course applies to both cutting and reproduction.

When I lived in Joplin, Missouri in the early 2000, the Crips were all over and the meth problem was insane. Houses were blowing up every day. That affects intonation and yeah, if it's way off it needs to be adjusted, but the biggest problem with tuning is strings getting "hung up" in the nut because the groove is not deep enough or the right shape or smooth enough. Especially if you have a vibrato device, you bend and it never comes back to pitch. That's the nut. It tough enough with a Fender with strings that pull straight through the nut, but with a 3 on a side headstock like Gibson (or even worse, Gretsch), the D and G have to go up to the pegs at an angle and it's very hard to keep them from sticking.

And almost every guitar you buy off the rack, no matter how expensive, needs the nut to be recut --- especially if you use a string guage that's not super light. I use a 10-52 set and I alway have to cut wider and deeper, especially on the lower string nut slots. But at this point my Jazzy stays in tune even when I bend. Same for my Bigsby-equipped Tele

MOM -- I've had the vertigo that comes abruptly with a head-down position, like nerve or artery kinked; recurs for a few days then vanishes. But a friend had persisting vertigo with no help in any diagnosis. He finally found instruction for a particular sequence of head positionings, intentionally affecting inner ear and its tiny important bit, and cleared it up. Something to look into if yours hangs on. But we hope for a new steady day for you quickly.
