Congrats on the story! Which paper does your friend consider to be the NYT of Germany? I'm legally German since 2007 and would like to see if I can find it online.

suddeutsche zeitung

Ah yes, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung is a good one. I was guessing either that or the Frankfurter Allgemeine. Or maybe Die Zeit, but it's a weekly, so in a way more akin to the New Yorker despite being in broadsheet format. I've been thinking of switching my online reading the the Sueddeutsche because the Frankfurter Rundschau has just gotten too pathetically written and the Frankfurter Allgemeine is too conservative. Since I'm not movig back to Frankfurt I can slowly stop with the local patriotism

They said that's what your profile pic looks like, since they have no idea what your last name is or what you actually look like. But maybe it was a young writer; to me anyone under 50 looks young.... I think they were praising your determination to work through a language you don't speak than making fun of it.
In any case, yes, I'm very glad you're on the air!

If you think German is hard, try learning Finnish :D . Though Finnish does have a couple of advantages: it's completely phonetiic, every letter is always pronounced the same way and EVERY word (even banaani and tomaatti asnd Maria) is accented on the first syllable. Also, no articles or word genders. In fact, it's also a quite non-sexist language, since there is only one personal pronoun for humans, which is hän.

Major competitive disciplines include slalom, wave and freestyle.[8] Increasingly, "foiling" is replacing traditional events and the IQfoil class[9] is the new Olympic windsurfing racing class for France in 2024.
