I first heard about them actually researching Myvatyn Iceland show in the archives, where they also appear and call them "little poop balls" haha (in Icelandic). the ainu used to live as far south as central honshu as late as the late 18th c...the meiji period really pushed them into the rural areas of northern hokkaido (mid -late 19th c)

ainuiac languages is a language isolate. the hokkaido ainu language is spoken/understood by maybe 300 people (back in the 80s, it was less then 100..., but has been going through a revival, like the culture in the last 20 years)
