Question- the “terrestrial” signal on 91.1 seems to have gotten worse- drifts a lot and seems harder to tune in especially on a car radio. What’s changed and can it be improved. Long time listener since 1978.

My origin story as a UK listener is that I was a fan of Laura Cantrell and heard that she had a show on WFMU, so in about 2000 or so I started listening in over the internet. At about the same time I bought a Nina Nastasia CD off Andy Waltzer and we emailed a little bit so I tuned in to his show too. From there that was it - a listener forever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
dreamyandseedy:

my origin story is: in summer of 2018 a band i follow on social media said they were gonna play a live set on WFMU (which i'd never heard of) so i tuned in a little early and caught the end of Sheila's show and was hooked by her playlist with all the pictures and all the band names i was unfamiliar with! the show after Sheila's that i tuned in for didn't last longer than the summer but i never missed Sheila's show again and that was my gateway drug

Origin Story: I grew up in Union County NJ and have been listening to WFMU since I was in about 6 grade (1986 or so). When I was going to Rutgers I had a job where my boss had been a student at Upsala College in the 1970's (I think) and was on the staff of the station the year it became freeform. He told me that the students raised a load of money to buy a new transmitter and when they got back the next fall, the college had locked them all out of the studio. Now we see who has the last laugh!!

My FMU origin story: When I moved to NY in 2001 I had two artist friends who shared a studio and kind of hated each other. They both loved FMU but they argued about it all the time--whether the daytime or nighttime DJs were better, who were the best DJs, whether Ken played too many mash-ups etc. One of them gave me a ripped CD-R of a marathon premium (maybe one of Charlie's?) and I was hooked. My first favorite line-up was Ken, Irwin, and Kenny G on Wednesdays, Trouble was my first radio crush, but I've listened more or less 24/7, live or via archives, since then. I can't imagine life without it.

Central fact of our time :
More & More is owned by Fewer & Fewer.
As Michael Pollan observed re food packaging : It may still be the Ma & Pa Farm on the label (...& still look like it used to) - that sure ain't what's really happening anymore.
In other words - all our Media (& really, all our everything) is Corporate & Top Down.
FMU comes off flippant - to maintain its sanity - but it is the Resistance more than perhaps we remember. But perhaps not - because I know we value it dearly.
...As for where I found out about it - oddly - I don't recall !! Probly just searching iTunes for Alt Streamers...

Origin Story? I grew up in Canada then lived in Asia for a few years before moving to Brooklyn in 98. Always scanned the dial wherever I was living in the hopes of finding the weird and wonderful. Then when I hit Brooklyn, tuned in to Jones and XRay and well, the rest is history.

Just imagining three or four spare transmitters leaning against the back of the station like huge beach umbrellas furled during the winter. . . .

Bill Berger’s show was what first got me into WFMU. I guess it was in the mid-to-late 1980s, and I’ve loved the station ever since. Thank goodness it’s still on the air/ I can’t imagine having to do without it.

Origin story: I think I read about WFMU while I was attending college in the Chicago area. Then I moved back to New Jersey. First started listening to WLIR, then moved over completely to WFMU starting in 1983 or 1984. Donated for the first time around then, to Bill Kelly's show.

One more archive question. Does anyone remember an overnight WFMU DJ who played answering machine messages of a woman threatening to kill her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend? The messages grew more and more disturbing and terrifying as they went on. This show would have been on in early January 2005. I remember that because it was the same week my grandmother passed away and I had horrible insomnia. I don’t remember the DJs name so I couldn’t look it up.

In '73 I discovered woofmoo living in northern NJ. Lost it when I moved to Baltimore but found a similar station WGTB from Georgetown University in DC. It was a great station. I later moved to Phoenix and re discovered WFMU through streaming about 7 years ago. Been listening and donating ever since. Rock On!

In 2019, while undergoing a hospital stay for a heart transplant, I somehow came across WFMU online. It was the transition between Clay and someone else, maybe Matt, and they were discussing Gum Elevators (a midwestern thing, apparently). I credit WFMU with my surviving the transplant with my sanity mostly intact. Became a Swag For Lifer, You all do incredible work. Say hi to Amanda for me! Fred H. in Delhi, NY

So cool to hear about your forthcoming archives app. I remember The Great Archive Crisis. After you'd retrieved all you could did it leave any gaps? I'm probably not the only listener to have a good number of MP3s stored from the last 20+ years, maybe we can help...
