I watched an interview with Vai and Satriani today just out of curiosity. They both said loved the guitarist Holdsworth because you couldn't hear the pick on the strings.

Meanwhile, I love hearing the fingers on the fretboard.

8 track sounded like crap and tracks would change in the middle of a song interrupting it and making and making a loud clunk noise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44am
Krys O.:

I remember 8-track players mostly from cars and particularly in the car of the older brother of a schoolmate. The specific advantage as I recall was the ability to change tracks at the push of a button. They were in music ads all the time.

8-tracks, as they wore out, would bleed into each other. So while listening to one song you could hear another in the background. Sometimes that would sound interesting.

8 tracks were the 1st thing you could play for yourself in a car. You didn't have to listen to some DJ on the radio.

They didn't have sleeves? how were they packaged originally? I don't know or remember.

Toothgrinder Tom:

For whatever reason I never encountered 8 tracks. Did they come before cassette tapes were available? And how long were they around?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20am
Ryan Sterlingvirtue:

damn, tfw you sat in boring meetings when you could be listening to curated chaos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22am
Ryan Sterlingvirtue:

8 tracks were interesting because they had like buttons on the front and they would take you to a different part of the album, but not to the beginning of a song.
  5:22am
dday:

↳ devlawn @5:05
I recall most having a cardboard sleeve open on one end, that you could slide the cart into to "protect" the exposed tape.

They existed about the same time as far as for consumer based music. 8 tracks since early 50's cassettes early 60's, but not widely used for music early on.

I watched this about the cassettes inventor Lou Otten

I had a 4 track player early on back when I was about 8 years old. Similar design to the 8 track cart but smaller, held less tape only 2 songs per each of it's four playing channels. They phased out pretty quickly.

Channel change button. No ffwd or rev on 8 track machines. I had a player/recorder for a long time. Lloyds Electronics. Left a brand new one behind in divorce #1

Believe it or not in the 50's you could get a 45 RPM vinyl record player for your car. Well before 8 track or cassette

I saw that in the movie ‘Il Sorpasso’ with Jean-Louis Trintingant and Vittorio Gassman about a car trip that ends in tragedy.

↳ David @4:47
Such a crummy format. The tape would stretch over time, get wound around the captan (tape drive shaft) and get eaten un-spooling itself in the player. I spent may hours opening 8 tracks & "rewinding" them, usually to have them just do the same thing.

They sold de-gaussers to demagnetize the playback head which sometimes helped and cleaning tapes that were either so abrasive they damaged the head permanently or another type you put a drop of alcohol on and ran it. Neither was very effective.

Toothgrinder Tom:

A perfect movie in a lot of ways.
