Lyrics
Condescending will as condescending does
You've got a pretty solid habit for killing the buzz
An electrician or a secret millionaire
A tacky statue on a forecourt in Bel-Air
No plastic surgery, no tattoo on the brain
You drag the passing years behind you on a ball and chain
Squander this and that, the feted and the hated
And when you turn the shit to gold it's not appreciated
And when you turn the shit to gold it's not appreciated
(A pretty solid habit for killing the buzz)
It's for the underdogs the ones that disappear
It's in your gut you feel the splendour of the fear
Sayonara is the nature of the beast
It's mine to leave behind a merciful release
Misappropriation, take the credit, pay the income tax
Misdirection from the actual brutal facts
You preach the truth through gritted teeth, you want a fucking medal
You've got a belly full of guns that doesn't make you special
Condescending will as condescending does
You've got a pretty solid habit for killing the buzz
An electrician or a secret millionaire
A tacky statue on a forecourt in Bel-Air
No plastic surgery, no tattoo on the brain
You drag the passing years behind you on a ball and chain
Squander this and that, the feted and the hated
And when you turn the shit to gold it's not appreciated
And when you turn the shit to gold it's not appreciated
But when you turn the shit to gold it's not appreciated
And when you turn the shit to gold it's not appreciated

Former FMU DJ Tony Rettman wrote a book on the original Michigan hardcore bands. When he did interviews, inevitably they’d end up in the basement smoking down and listening to ELP - haha!

I'm going to guess that was around '84...once Black Flag grew their hair out everyone thought they could stop playing as fast as humanly possible.

funny, I own this on vinyl but none of this sounds familiar. never considered the Tarkus as a forerunner to Survival Research Labs, either.

A little ELP anecdote. The first thing I ever heard by them was in a college music history class, where the teacher played their version of "Pictures At An Exhibition." I'd never heard of them, at that time still listening mostly to Top 40 radio.

I love the perverse quality of ELP being played on FMU... I unabashedly love ELP — as long as I don't look too closely at the lyrics.

And I love the ridiculousness of a section being titled "Aquatarkus."

You know, this part of the suite has some pretty good, moving anti-war lyrics. Timely, unfortunately.

Good point! I believe Paperback Writer is the first Beatles track with Rickenbacker bass on it. The conservative Abbey Road engineers were afraid it would make the needle jump when played back
