With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

August 4, 2024: Hello, Herbie
Today’s party is for Texas gih-tar slinger, the fabulous, melodious Herb Ellis, on his 103rd birthday. He covered a lotta ground - in Tommy Dorsey’s band in his early 20's, to accompanying Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and other songbirds; years in Oscar Peterson’s trio with Ray Brown; frequently playing with Ben Webster, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Getz, Gillespie, Eldridge- and with guitarists Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd, to name three; studio work galore, and a big old discography as a leader.

* Glen Passaic Pullman Porter
2oz Glen Passaic
1 pint best porter or stout
1 loaf white sandwich bread, sliced
butter, softened
Lay bread slices across two sheet pans and bake at 350F until golden brown. Butter thoroughly. Using an inverted pint glass, punch out a circle from each. Pull pint of porter or stout, and set on a plate. Drop bread slice by slice around the pint of porter until level with the rim. Pour shot of Glen Passaic, and drop depth charge style into porter, allowing buttered toast to soak up excess ale. Serve warm (toast), cool (porter), and toxic (Glen Passaic).

Here's Picturegoer magazine, a London review, on the British issue of Ellis in Wonderland:
"A far cry from the old plonk-and-bang school of big-band fingerers, this. Take in 'It Can Happen to You,' 'Pogo,' and the title number--and you'll go short of lunch next week."
