In 1973, Surinamese singer and arranger Alberto Gemerts asked his neighbour, journalist and children's book reviewer Josje Duister, to sing something to test out his new studio equipment.[2] Duister sang her self-written song 100 Years. Later, the recording ended up by chance with a producer from the record company Delta, who saw something in it. Under the pseudonym Joey Dyser, the song was released as a single in December 1974. It immediately became a great success in the Netherlands and Flanders, where it reached the top of the charts and was immediately certified gold. The German version of the song (Was ist denn bloss gescheh'n) also did well in Germany.[3]
After some insistence, the singer was willing to record an LP (Who's a Fulltime Saint?). A second single from this album was released in the summer of 1975, Let the Sun Shine In (On My World Again), but it did not reach the charts. After a third single (War Is Over) and a fourth failed attempt in 1977 with the single Paul, Duister called it quits in show business. Since then, she has devoted herself entirely to her family and her work in an Amsterdam art gallery. She was married to Frans Duister, and later married the philosopher Jaap van Heerden.
Duister is known as one of the most striking one-hit wonders in Dutch pop music.
