I think that hip hop is a more honest ideology of what punk wanted to be. US punk is different then UK punk, at least its beginnings. And their stories have been changed for 40 years of capitalism. But there are tons of very lively punk scenes everywhere. DIY is alive and well it just sounds different and has more genres

i don't do that, but power tools... even if i know it will take (literally) under 2 seconds.
... and i quickly turn off music that has very high frequencies -not uncommon in "noise" music.
and that's why i use regular ear plugs, made for work situations - because they cut out most the high end, which is the most damaging. i can still hear the music just fine, just heavy on the low-end.

Yes high frequencies are very dangerous. I used to use the foam earplugs but found them uncomfortable. Now I use the silicone putty ones. They mold to your ear. I’m careful to put them in their case so that I know which is L and R. They last awhile before getting dirty

the foam ones are not uncomfortable for me -and i do re-use them a few times (sometimes i forget them in my pocket when i wash my pants and then they're basically like new again!)
but the pvc ones are difficult because they start to expand immediately when i stop squeezing them...i guess i have small ear holes?! because i can't get them in unless i'm extremely quick
