A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Interesting musical content. I certainly appreciate it, but the timing of this (right on the heels of Wake and Bake) is a tad bit jarring. Lovely content for the wee-hours of the morning. My favorite NYC corruption scandal involved the Sheriff of New York County, Thomas Farley, who testified during the citywide investigation in the 1930s. Judge Seabury elicited this testimony:
Seabury: Where did you keep these moneys you had saved?
Farley: In a safe-deposit box at home in my house.
Q: Whereabouts at home in the house did you keep this money that you had saved?
A: In the safe.
Q: In a little box in a safe? A: A big safe.
Q: But a little box in a big safe?
A: In a big box in a big safe. Q: Was the box crowded or very full?
A: Well, it was full and plenty in it.
Q: Now, Sheriff, was this big box that was safely kept in the big safe a tin box or a wooden box?
A: A tin box.
Q: Giving you the benefit of every doubt on sums from your official vocation, the $83,000 extra you deposited in 1929 came from the same source that the other money came from?
A: It did. Same tin box.
Q: Kind of a magic box?
A: It was a wonderful box.
Q: A wonderful box. What did you have to do - rub the lock with a little gold, and open it to find more money?
A: I wish I could.

And branch librarians are really keyed in to what their communities want. If they are putting up displays about Palestine it's because they have patrons who want more information. Because they are in the best sense of the words civil servants. So the library managers (NB: politicians, not librarians) are acting against their own mandate.

Crownless Gander:

Marx on electoral politics: "Even when there is no prospect whatsoever of their being elected, the workers must put up their own candidates in order to preserve their independence, to count their forces, and to bring before the public their revolutionary attitude and party standpoint. In this connection they must not allow themselves to be seduced by such arguments of the democrats as, for example, that by so doing they are splitting the democratic party and making it possible for the reactionaries to win. The ultimate intention of all such phrases is to dupe the proletariat. The advance which the proletarian party is bound to make by such independent action is indefinitely more important than the disadvantage that might be incurred by the presence of a few reactionaries in the representative body."

And the Rethugs will fight tooth and nail to keep it that way because without the electoral college, you would never see another Yalliban Rethug President ever again. The US STILL never really dealt with its bloody foundation of slavery and mass genocide against the indigenous populations, as well as pretty much treating EVERY wave of immigrants like shit in some kind of pecking order to this very day. And Europe...well....colonialism and two very bloody World Wars means that they have a labor problem....as well as the fact that they willingly traded 6 million plus Jews who had been there for hundereds of years and integrated, productive members of society for 10 million mostly male economic refugees who absolutely hate what we would consider Western values.

And they did that by convincing Uncle Cletus Cousinfucker that anyone remotely smarter or more successful than them was trying to force them to read a book or something, and to cast blame on anyone that looked different than them -- all while American manufacturing was pretty much eviscerated and the destruction of the middle class went on unabated because of outrage politics.

And back to Transmetropolitan -- even though it takes place in the future, it could be now -- one standout line is that "America doesn't manufacture shit anymore; the only thing we export is bad reality TV" or something along those lines. The shit and shenanigans covered in it are an almost perfect parallel of what's going on right now, here, today.

And back to the idea of the Federalist Society set and packing the courts...the first major play of course was Bush vs. Gore, and once Gore conceded, that's when I knew we were fucked. The Dems are slowly, slowly, SLOWLY starting to realize that you don't bring a fucking teacup poodle and a spoon to a pit bull fight where all of the other participants have rocket launchers.

I’m stuck in a horribly-organized, massive Bklyn Dem Party meeting in a Marriott ballroom after waiting in a seemingly infinite line for an hour. It’s never clear if the corrupt leadership of this Tammany Hall relic intentionally organizes poorly to get reformers to give up and go home, or if they’re just incompetent. Maybe a little of both! Do we have the votes to topple Eric Adams’s pals this year? Who knows?

Let's not forget that this postwar "prosperity"was only for white Americans and was predicated on retooling a war industrial base to massive production of cars and spreading that to Europe and beyond, massively accelerating the climate crisis and establishing the primacy of the automobile and the supposed "right" to automobility (that is, the growth at any and all cost of fossil fuel companies and manufacturers of cars and planes) -- all of which is the greatest existential threat to the species (with the possible exception of nuclear weapons). So that "advancement" was once again to benefit a tiny (white, wealthy, capitalist) minority at the expense of every other life on Earth. Prosperity? Advancement? I am not seeing it.

True, Trouble, of course. But the wealth extraction of the bosses vs. the meager wealth accumulation of the workers (not to mention redlining and all else) ensured that extraction worked in one direction only.

So yeah, now, we've spread pollution all around the world -- privatized profit and socialized the damage. And any solutions are no longer in America's hands; we fumbled the ball. While we have half the country insisting that a blastula can vote and carry a gun, China is cozying up to India and China is going ahead of us as far as medicine and tech -- the only two fucking things that the US had an edge in back after the wars. AND WE DID IT TO OURSELVES. WE outsourced all of our shit to them and they took it all and copied it. Do you think the Chinese government is going to NOT use fetal tissue for drug development? They have an iron-fisted top down system of government and a high social cohesion, which means they can get shit done a lot faster than us. Its neighbor, India, OTOH is still a shattered nation in many ways post-colonialism BUT it has a huge population and like China, a huge global diaspora of well-to-dos.

Thanks for playing the Jan Steele - my first introduction to WFMU was a friend sharing this album with me that he had found on FMU ages ago. I had played the album while he was visiting, and I guess he searched and found in the archives.
