Morning all. Happy to be here. Feeling harried. Did not have a ton of time to put the show together so good luck with this. I hope you like it. Also, Hellraiser is happening so feel free to donate. Or don't. If you already donate, we are eternally grateful. If you don't, we are still just happy you're here. There's nothing like this station in the world.

hi fred...started reading frederic jameson's last book on post war french philosophy, which just in it's introductory parts is about france's complicated history. i'm learning a lot of things i wasn't aware of at all like the issue of americanization and the somewhat loss of identity with the european union and other things...you think this has any interest for you, even though you are probably couched in stuff like this
Avatar 3:40am
Jeremiah:

↳ tom tom the pipers son @3:20
We can be couched in our own history but also unaware of it. In the classes I'm taking I keep having to remind myself that everything I'm reading is under the shadow of Capitalism. Like, it colors every interaction and opinion. And not in a necessarily negative way (although I am not a fan) but it's this thing that you always have to be aware that we are viewing the world through.

An outside perspective can always be insightful, but I'm not very interested in France. Loss of identity and americanization are something that people here feel and talk about (especially on the right), but since I know a lot of people from many different countries, I think it's BS. And if decolonization isn't mentioned at length, I think you can dismiss that chapter, as it is still very important.
As for French philosophy, I don't care about it (apart from Bourdieu, who was not considered a proper philosopher but a "mere" sociologist)

"in a not necessarily negative way"... i see that in young immigrant families i see that seem to be happy and seem to be stable economically at least there seems to be some fresh growth in capitalism on the positive side
Avatar 3:53am

But they would be thriving under a less exploitive and, frankly, nihilist, system. It's just not practical though. While Capitalism is the dominant paradigm, nothing else can really exist except to exist in relation to Capitalism.

jameson points out even in my initial reading the colonization is still entrenched under a different name, a buzzword i can't think of right now....this is prevalent and should be obvious

yes i agree...the "success" of some immigrants sticks out because it seems like a miracle, and it's good for them individually, but masks larger evils, problems with capitalism

i don't know much about the catholic church's involvement in central america (so i should shut up) and where they stand politically, but i believe there is a part that is socialist...(.for instance there's a catholic workers office near where i live)...and psychologically i think it's the catholic church's influence that's buoying the immigrants who attain stability....and if i'm going go pipedream with this idea, i'd say the wave of immigration might be a trojan horse which transforms capitalism in the u.s.

i'm saying this with a negative disposition toward both the catholic church and the economics we live under based on first hand experience

Well, it's complicated. There was the "liberation" movement that was definitely leftist. The church frowned on it.
Then there is Opus Dei (pretty sordid) and the church support for dictators.
And then again there are the Jesuits (maybe more in South America), who in some countries run the only affordable higher education system (nominally to prepare for priesthood, but friends told me that priests there would discourage them from it to test their vocation, and it was OK to fail that test)

I think you are referring to South American "Socialism" which, I admit, I am not terribly familiar with but I think it usually reverted to like death camps and shit due to the School of the Americas? I, again, profess my relative ignorance. But I honestly don't think the Catholic church is at all a net positive for humanity. Any church really, but the Catholic church especially.

I’ll say Im with you Jeremiah. Nothing exist except white capitalism. It permeates every aspect of our society and culture. If I wasn’t such a optimist, I would say its probably impossible for any of us to have any real perspective at this point because we have been entrenched in the strongest years of its reign for all our loves. Capitalism got so good at capitalism it made it unavoidable for everyone which is what makes it so easy to not think its the enemy or come up with pockets of examples for it that dont really reflect the larger picture.

well i'm making a not all too convincing argument that this wave of immigration could lead to a transformation of labor the u.s. and somewhere beyond the topic of capitalism in the abstract, i think it's good to see the new arrivals that attain economic stability as being a corporeal good outside of theory
