Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Obviously - but significantly - it characterizes the Psychedelic experience that it breaks down boundaries. This was also true of the San Francisco culture of the whole era. Phil Lesh of course was the one into serious Academic (Classical) Musics & the Avant-garde. When he met Jerry Garcia - as an emissary of BlueGrass, Country & Folk Musics - it turned his head around how they carried narratives...
& of course Phil was a ⦿Sun in ♓︎Pisces - the last sign representing reuniting with the sea of infinity - & that was how broad his horizons were - & the same for his sensitivities & compassions... born 1940 Year of the Metal 🐉Dragon - 🐉Dragons known for having larger than life personalities - complex with lives that have many twists...

from about the second-ish half of their concert playing career the dead would split their second set up with an all improv segment (Drums/Space). a drum solo form the 2 drummers would develop out of a usually jammed out song and then that would develop into increasingly psychedelic kind of sounds (see mikey hart’s beam), and that would segue into Space which was all out weirdness, and then that in turn would typically land on a mellow/sad garcia tune to bring the folks out of that part of the show, and then they’d wrap
up with some party rock n roll songs.
this is space.

Our version of B&N is probably Indigo, but it's marketing more candles, throw pillows and 'popular titles' than what it once did. I do have one last remaindered/used outlet that I frequent. It's like the old man's house in the animated feature 'UP': the last old little building on a street downtown, hunkered down at the feet of 70-story glass condo towers. BMV books and me, we're slowly sinking beneath the waves together.
