Richard Dawson | Boxing Day Sales | End of the Middle | Domino Recording Co. | 2024/2025 | On Nov 25 Richard Dawson shared "the second song from the forthcoming record, “Boxing Day sales” – a beautifully wonky pop number that merges Dawson’s deft yet infectious melodies with a pleasing bolt of jagged clarinet from Faye MacCalman (who plays the role of “lightning” throughout the album). It’s also his hugely unorthodox bid for Christmas Number 1. //// “I wanted to make a pure pop song,” says Rich. “Almost like a total throwaway song – like a Christmas gift: A pair of novelty socks, some Lynx Africa, or a daft plastic puzzle you get on Christmas morning and then chuck in a drawer for the next 10 years. I wanted it to be the most throwaway and lightweight triviality of a thing.” But Dawson also found himself moved by the noble spirit of the character in his song, lifting it to a place that went beyond disposable gifts, pop hooks, and a critique of capitalism. “Even when there isn’t much room for a character to speak you still must go all the way with them”. //// The video – directed (once again) by James Hankins – features Rich posing in a series of shop windows and famous Central London spots as well as vignettes of eager shoppers going about their day. As Dawson’s final repeated lyrics “You owe it to yourself” ring out, we are left with a parting image of rubbish being collected." Elvis Costello & The Attractions | TKO (Boxing Day) | Punch The Clock | F-Beat / Columbia | 1983 | "Punch the Clock is the eighth studio album by the English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello, and his seventh with the Attractions—keyboardist Steve Nieve, bassist Bruce Thomas and drummer Pete Thomas (no relation). It was released on 5 August 1983 through F-Beat Records in the United Kingdom and Columbia Records in the United States. Produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, the album was Costello's attempt at making a commercial record following years of dwindling commercial success. It was recorded at London's AIR Studios in early 1983 and features contributions from the TKO Horns and Afrodiziak. //// Featuring genres such as new wave, pop rock, R&B and soul, commentators have compared the album's sound to Costello's previous records Armed Forces (1979) and Get Happy!! (1980). The songs are filled with catchy choruses and lyrics covering relationships and political themes. The record contains Costello's version of "Shipbuilding", co-written with Langer and featuring a trumpet solo by Chet Baker. The album takes its title from a lyric in "The Greatest Thing" and the cover artwork was designed by Phil Smee. //// Extensively promoted through live performances, Punch the Clock yielded Costello's first US Top 40 hit, "Everyday I Write the Book". "Pills and Soap" was released as a single under a pseudonym and through Costello's own IMP label, which reached number 16 in the UK. The album was his best-selling since Get Happy!!, reaching number three in the UK and number 24 in the US, eventually certified gold in both countries. Despite its success, Costello later expressed disdain for the record, finding its sound dated." | 0:15:48 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Fall | Boxoctosis Alarum | Interim | Hip Priest | 2004 | The Fall are one of those rare bands who hears an alarm going off during a rehearsal, keep playing, and even after playback thinks, sure, let's release that forth, unto public ears and supportive fans... "Interim is an album by English post-punk band The Fall, compiled from live and studio material and released in 2004 by record label Hip Priest. //// Interim features the first officially released versions of "Clasp Hands", "Blindness" and "What About Us?" – all of which were later included on the band's next studio album Fall Heads Roll (2005) – as well as the instrumental "I'm Ronnie the Oney". The remaining tracks are all new versions of previously released songs, mostly from studio rehearsal recordings. //// Interim was originally to be titled Cocked - the alternate title was given on a promotional CD for "Blindness", which also gave the track's title as "Blind Man"." | 0:19:14 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Creepers | Chocolate Box | Miserable Sinners | In-Tape | 1986 | Produced by Jon Langford of The Mekons! "The Creepers were an English rock music group, formed in Manchester in 1982, originally as Marc Riley and the Creepers. After being dismissed from The Fall by Mark E. Smith, Marc Riley formed his own record label (In-Tape) with Jim Khambatta, and his own band. The first single "Favourite Sister" (which featured his former bandmates Steve Hanley, Craig Scanlon and Paul Hanley) was followed up with "Jumper Clown", which poked fun at his previous band's singer. A Peel Session was the source of the next release in 1984, with a compilation of these early releases, Cull, following the same year. First album proper, Gross Out, appeared in June 1984. 1985 saw the release of the second album Fancy Meeting God as well as a swansong live album Warts 'n' All towards the end of the year. //// Riley then recruited ex-Membranes Mark Tilton and Phil Roberts of Shrubs, and carried on as simply "The Creepers". With a more sophisticated sound, the first release under this name was a cover of Brian Eno's "Baby's on Fire", with the album Miserable Sinners following later the same year. After signing to Red Rhino, a further single, "Brute" and album Rock 'n' Roll Liquorice Flavour appeared in 1987 and 1988 respectively. Sleeper: A Retrospective followed in 1989. The band briefly became 'The Lost Soul Crusaders' before splitting up." | 0:22:37 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Six Days After Christmas | What's So Wrong With Me | winter compositions | 9th St/Hallywood | 2024 | Somewhat mystery slacker rock/shoegaze band. My new favourite gaze bad. The sixth day of Christmas is 6 geese a laying. The 12 days of Christmas is the period in Christian theology that marks the span between the birth of Christ and the coming of the Magi, the three wise men. It begins on December 25 (Christmas) and runs through January 6 (the Epiphany, sometimes also called Three Kings’ Day). | 0:34:39 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Little Eva | Let's Turkey Trot | Let's Turkey Trot / Old Smokey Locomotion 7" | London Records | 1963 | The record features girl group The Cookies on background vocals, with the Cookies' lead Earl-Jean McCrea getting some solo lines. The song's title is a reference to the turkey trot dance step, a step that was only briefly popular fifty years before the song was released; the song is played at a tempo much slower than the one used for the dance in its heyday. | 0:35:53 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Mock Tudors | Hair of the Dog | Hair of the Dog Single | Mock Tudors | 2024 | ‘South Yorkshire’s answer to Buzzcocks meet The Sweet’, Mock Tudors‘ frenetic glam infused garage-punk oozed from the basement of Delicious Clam in Sheffield in January of 2022. Since then the band have released a set of EP’s alongside a bootleg LP, headline toured extensively, supported the likes of The Bug Club and The Futureheads, and played live in session twice for BBC 6 Music. With songs about everything from domestic recycling politics (Bin Day), to a PTA meeting gone awry (Nutbush Coffee Morning), Mock Tudors write it, so you don’t have to. "For some context about the Tudors behind the costumes: we started this project in the basement of collective space Delicious Clam as a kind of therapy session/support group. We are each other’s best friends and initially had no intention of doing anything but playing 12-bar blues in a basement to counteract the stresses of freelance life and living like artists. This quickly grew into an all-out live show where we could share our love for music and provide some light relief for our wonderful fans. We love it." The band is currently on a mental health break...and we hope they return! | 0:38:18 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Billiam | Boxing | Corner Tactics | Under the Gun | 2023 | Self described as the first "autism-core" artist, Billiam is a frantic, off the walls, 21 year old from Naarm who's been yelling into mics since until his voice snaps since he was 16. His debut LP Corner Tactics (the first time he's released a record longer than 15 minutes in his life) is an uncompromising cacophony of riffs and spits blended into a stew poured into a bowl with a hole that's slowly leaking onto the table. | 0:41:20 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Johnny Cash | Ringing the Bells for Jim | The Classic Christmas Album | Sony | 2013 | Music of any variety, Christmas or non, is inherently emotional. “Music is unique because it sparks activity in just about every circuit in the brain,” Nina Krauss, a professor of neurobiology at Northwestern University, told me. “This supercharge of activity integrates sensory networks, cognitive networks and emotional networks.” In other words, music is a direct bridge from our senses to our innermost feelings. The sadness of holiday music may, paradoxically, comfort us. Research conducted by graduate students at the University of Southern California last year found that songs that deal with emotions like grief and sorrow can purge bad feelings and actually have a healing effect on our brains. We find sad music pleasurable when it’s perceived as non-threatening and when it produces psychological benefits, the study found. The good news is...this particular song has a happy ending! | 0:43:24 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Queens of the Stone Age | Broken Box | Lullabies to Paralyze | Interscope | 2005 | Boxing Day originated in the United Kingdom in the 1800s Traditionally, Boxing Day was a day off for the working class, and the wealthy would give gifts to the poor in boxes. Boxing Day is also known as Offering Day. Lullabies to Paralyze is the fourth studio album by American rock band Queens of the Stone Age, released on March 22, 2005. | 0:46:08 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Silent - K | Goldberg Gravy | Wonky Punk | Liverpool’s SILENT–K are a ferocious, somewhat unhinged four piece with unique and infectious melodies and electrifying hip-hop infused rock n roll. Originally co-founded by Taylor with Dave McCabe from critically acclaimed Liverpool band The Zutons. Chris Taylor says "We were just described on BBC 6 Music by Tom Robinson as a “sharp irresistible slice of retro futurist funk-pop, sounding like the unholy love child of Roxy Music and the pioneering early noughties outfit CLOR”. Personally, I think we’re more like Talking Heads and DEVO on Turkish toast." | 0:49:09 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Gee Tee | Couch Potato | Prehistoric Chrome | Nailbitber Records | 2024 | Sounds from both the distant future and the nearly forgotten past of Sydney's cromagnon titans, freshly risen from their electromagnetic tombs and etched into discs of eternal obsidian, to forever be blasted across the gleaming chrome horizon. Based in Sydney, Australia and lead by the iconic Kel Mason, this band of maniacal rock n roll miscreants has been blowing drooly-punk minds for the past few years with a rash of out-of-print records and ridiculous videos that have bounced around the proper channels of the internet underbelly. | 0:51:16 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Courtney Barnett | Boxing Day Blues | Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit | Milk! Records / Marathon Artists / House Anxiety / Mom + Pop Music | 2015 | Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit is the debut studio album by Australian indie rock musician Courtney Barnett, released on 20 March 2015. The album received wide acclaim and was ranked as one of the best albums of 2015 by numerous publications. //// After playing with various bands in Melbourne, Barnett used money that she had borrowed from her grandmother to start her own Milk Records label and released her first EP, I've Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris (2012). Following that release, Barnett signed to Marathon Artists (via its House Anxiety imprint). In August 2013, Marathon Artists released The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, packaging the first EP with Barnett's second, How To Carve A Carrot into a Rose. The Double EP brought Barnett international critical acclaim, with the lead single, "Avant Gardener", named 'Best New Track' by Pitchfork in 2013. How To Carve A Carrot was released on a limited run by Milk! Records as a standalone EP in October 2013. In 2014, Marathon Artists partnered with Mom + Pop Music for the US release of The Double EP. //// Barnett had spent a year writing songs for her album but only showed them to her band a week before they were recorded in order to capture a "fresh" sound. The song "Pedestrian at Best" was written "at the last minute" and the recorded version was the first time that Barnett had sung the words out loud. The album was largely recorded over eight days in Melbourne in April 2014 but the release was delayed due to touring commitments. Some early promo copies were distributed in Europe in mid-December 2014, and Barnett unveiled the album at the 2015 South by Southwest music festival in March and then embarked on a world tour beginning in Paris. //// In the liner notes, Barnett reveals that the album's title was inspired by a poster that hung in her grandmother's bathroom. It is also used as part of the lyrics of the hidden/bonus song "Stair Androids & Valley Um..." | 1:01:29 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Portishead | Glory Box | Roseland NYC Live | Universal | 1998 | "Geoff Barrow and Beth Gibbons formed the band after meeting during a coffee break at an Enterprise Allowance course in Bristol in February 1991. Taking their name from the nearby town of Portishead." //// "Roseland NYC Live is a live album by English electronic music band Portishead. It was released on 2 November 1998 by Go! Beat. A PAL format VHS video was released the same year, with a DVD version following four years later. Although the New York Philharmonic is credited as appearing in the video, none of the musicians are members of the Philharmonic, nor is the Philharmonic credited in the audio album." | 1:04:29 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Fad Gadget | The Box | The Fad Gadget Singles | Mute | 1979 / 1986 | The Fad Gadget Singles is the 1986 collection of singles by British musician Fad Gadget. The album versions of these songs are not only of differing lengths, they were also often alternative mixes. The songs span the career of Fad Gadget from "Back to Nature" / "The Box" (his first single, double A side) to "One Man's Meat", his final single before Fad Gadget reverted to his given name of Frank Tovey for the remainder of his recording career (he toured with Depeche Mode under the persona of Fad Gadget once again, only a few months before his death of a heart attack on 3 April 2002.) //// "Back to Nature" / "The Box" was the second single ever to be released on Mute Records in October 1979. One b-side, "4M" from the "Life on the Line" single, is included on the collection. | 1:10:57 (MP3 | Pop-up)

It was released on 2 February 2018 by Domino Recording Company. The album's namesake is an audio plug-in. Teenage Head | Little Boxes | Teenage Head | Epic | 1979 | "Teenage Head is a Canadian punk rock group from Hamilton, Ontario, that has been popular in Canada since the early 1980s. /// The group was formed in Hamilton, Ontario in 1974 by Frankie Venom (Frank Kerr), Gord Lewis, Steve Mahon, and Nick Stipanitz. //// Venom died on October 15, 2008. Lewis died August 7, 2022. //// The band's name is a reference to The Flaming Groovies' 1971 album Teenage Head, which Gord Lewis had seen advertised in a music magazine but not heard, and decided that he, one day, would form a band with that name. //// Teenage Head was formed in 1975 when the band members were students at Westdale High School in Hamilton. The original lineup featured Gord Lewis on guitar, Steve Park on guitar, Frankie Venom on drums and Dave Desroches on vocals. Frankie Venom quickly became the new vocalist, and Lewis recruited old friends Steve Mahon to play bass and Nick Stipanitz to play drums. //// DesRoches moved on to form his own group, The Shakers. He rejoined Teenage Head as vocalist in the mid-1980s (for the album Electric Guitars), and yet again in 2016. Steve Park soon left and later joined another Hamilton band, Simply Saucer. //// Their first gig was on October 17, 1975, in the Westdale Secondary School cafeteria. The band's first professional gigs happened in February 1976 with a few shows at the Town Casino at Main and Walnut streets in Hamilton. //// By May 1978, they released their first single "Picture My Face" on Epic Records, and their self-titled debut, Teenage Head, followed a year later, which went gold. The band's performance at The Last Pogo concert on December 1, 1978, at The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, ended in a riot and was shut down by the police. The concert was made into a short film by Colin Brunton, The Last Pogo. In 2006, Brunton began a feature-length documentary film about the concert, including additional interviews and footage of Teenage Head. It was released on DVD in 2008 as a tribute to the late Frankie Venom. //// Gold-selling Frantic City was released in 1980. It was the band's breakthrough album, making them stars across Canada with the hit singles "Let's Shake" and "Somethin' On My Mind". They toured to support that album, including opening the major Heatwave festival in August. In June 1980 their performance at Toronto's Ontario Place sparked a riot. The incident made headlines across the country, and led Ontario Place to ban rock concerts for several years." | 1:17:31 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Mika Miko | Turkey Sandwich | We Be XUXA | Post Present Medium | 2009 | Mika Miko was an American band formed in 2003 in Los Angeles, California. In 2004, they gained local popularity for their frenetic live performances. Featuring Victor Fandgore (Jennifer Clavin), Jet Blanca (Jenna Thornhill), Michelle Suarez, Jessica Clavin, and Jon Erik Edrosa, the original line up of the band made its first demo CD-R, its first 7" record, and toured the West Coast extensively before replacing their original drummer with Kate Hall and embarking on their first national tour in the summer of 2005. Despite a sizable discography, the band stated they are best appreciated live. As Jessica Clavin told ClashMusic.com: "I think we come off better live than we do recorded. It's better to have that impact as a live band, isn't it? If we had to choose to be better live or recorded, we'd go with live." They disbanded after this album to focus on higher education and other projects... | 1:27:43 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Nouvelle Vague | Too Drunk to Fuck | Nouvelle Vague | Kwaidan Records | 2004 | Nouvelle Vague is a French cover band led by musicians Olivier Libaux and Marc Collin. Their name means "new wave" in French, and refers simultaneously to the French New Wave cinema movement of the 1960s, to the new wave music movement of the 1970s and 1980s, which provides many of the songs that the band covers, and to bossa nova (Portuguese for "new wave"), a musical style that the band frequently uses in its arrangements. Libaux died in 2021 but the band continues to tour. | 1:29:27 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Primus | Seas of Cheese | Sailing the Seas of Cheese | Interscope Records | 1991 | Can cheese give you a buzz? Cheese contains casein as well as the amino acid tyrosine, and both chemicals can cause an increase in dopamine in the brain. So the short answer is ``Yes.'' | 1:31:44 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Gong | Wet Cheese Delirium | Camembert Electrique | BYG | 1971 | Gong are a psychedelic rock band that incorporates elements of jazz and space rock into their musical style. The group was formed in Paris in 1967 by Australian musician Daevid Allen and English vocalist Gilli Smyth. Eating cheese late at night, the rumour goes, will give you strange dreams. As far back as 1964, a researcher noted that a patient stopped having nightmares when he dropped his habit of eating one or two ounces of cheddar cheese every evening. More recently, the now-defunct British Cheese Board, who funded a study in 2005 and concluded that eating blue cheese causes vivid dreams, while cheddar makes people dream about celebrities. The study wasn't exactly scientifically robust or published in a peer-reviewed journal, but the findings helped to perpetuate the belief that cheese can affect the content of our dreams. Whtat's your favourite wet cheese? | 1:32:25 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Lunch Table | I Am Eating Cheese | I Am Eating Cheese | The Lunch Table | 2020 | Eating cheese can be upsetting if you have lactose intolerance, a dairy allergy, or an upset stomach: People with lactose intolerance are unable to fully digest the sugar (lactose) in milk. As a result, they have diarrhea, gas and bloating after eating or drinking dairy products. The condition, which is also called lactose malabsorption, is usually harmless, but its symptoms can be uncomfortable. New research argues that cheese is addictive in a way similar to drugs because of a chemical called casein, which is found in dairy products and can trigger the brain's opioid receptors. | 1:32:57 (MP3 | Pop-up)
