Yeah, but their other option was a park, designed by Fredrick Law Olmstead, that would meander through all of LA and also be a flood plain, with plants that were water resistant. LA would have been full of neighborhoods with their own park.

I referred to his map outlining gang turf in South L.A. when I would go there. One time I was with a friend from San Francisco who had owned a bungalow courtyard in the 'hood. He sold it and reinvested the money in the Lower Haight, where he prospered beyond belief. He was fearless and self possessed. He wanted to walk down some crappy alley, and I had to stop him. "We're n the Rolling 60's, maybe we shouldn't do this." He got dismissive with me, but I had to remind him he had been away from Los Angeles too long, and things had changed.
