Good morning all!

Saddened to hear of the passing of Barre Phillips. Years ago I found a holy grail LP on eBay, Phillips and Dave Holland's Music from Two Basses (natch). I was horrified when it arrived "packed" (I use the term loosely) in a big bubble envelope with no cardboard or nothing to protect it. Miraculously it arrived intact.

"Henry House is the first long-form piece that doesn’t feature Wooley’s trumpet. It is also the first to be constructed around his poetic writing. Wooley weaves a strange funeral mass for a fictional everyman from isolated phrases culled from essays, poems, and non-fiction written by Wendell Berry, John Berryman, Joseph Mitchell, and Reiner Stach. After organizing the fragments into a dream narrative, Wooley rewrote the text dozens of times, manipulating the stitched-together story until only glimpses of its sources remained."

Mailer’s violent fight with Rip Torn, who plays his half brother in the film, is its most moving sequence. Rip Torn confronts Mailer and tells him he believes that an assassination attempt is the only fitting end. “Norman T. Kingsley, I have something for you.” He then proceeds to hit him twice on the head with a toy hammer. Mailer has always feared betrayal. His fame has made him vulnerable to jealous as well as justifiable attacks and his commitment to unique social concepts, a target for political enemies. Today, America’s revolution has all the qualities of a grotesque “camp.” The film Maidstone is part of this “camp” — an absurd statement in an absurd time.

Upon reflection: I think two things surprised us about this image. First, that ECM's aesthetic seems to celebrate the city (urbanity as it were) OR nature. The "rural" (and indeed the very notion of "labor) being notably absent.

second and perhaps more viscerally: the sepia tone suggests nostalgia which seems out-of-step with the crystalline ECM sound
