I continue to haunt lovely Beverly, Massacusetts, recently retired (as of three weeks ago), and now fully committed to listening to words and music, and creating such things as well.
And now, as I begin my new life, I awake to a day that features new and wonderful things: a cup of coffee, a headful of ideas, the chance to wish Andrea C a happy birthday, the chance to work on a follow up to my legendary ukulele cover of "Goldfinger," and the chance, right now, right here, at this moment, to listen to the dulcet tones of the 12 inch of "Head Over Heels."
And of course, yet again, Dan Morfitt knows exactly the cue to give me to get my mind into writing mode this morning. That brief sound clip command of "down periscope" reminds me to look inward, and find the ideas and images that I can share on my blog. Remember blogs? Early 2000s nostalgia. Good stuff.
Soon the sun will rise and vampires will turn to their coffins with built in Bang and Olufson speakers, the better to listen to Wake and Bake at 6. Meanwhile, I, a creature of daylight, will walk the earth and contemplate how to make half and half whole.
And the both of us, living and dead, shall, with periscopes down, dive deeply into our respective minds, and then meet again tomorrow, when we shall savor this moment in which my day begins and their day ends, and make a vow to meet again, tomorrow, and listen to Cat Bomb Radio.
This show is, indeed, my sweet cheese, my good time boy.
Good morning, all you fine people.

As a (now retired) librarian who cares deeply about truth, it is worth remembering that social media is much like fire: a powerful device that can spread ideas with an effectiveness that brings to mind William Burroughs contention that language is a virus from outer space.
There is no doubt that we live in an age in which, from my perspective, we've seen three huge developments: the ability to store huge amounts of information in small spaces, the ability to copy that information (text, audio, and video in particular), and the ability to transmit information.
Like fire, social media can spread destruction. Yet in small places such as here, it is a place of light and warmth, something that keeps us alive.
Not all social media is created alike...thank goodness. In the same way that Gaul in the Asterix cartoons (boy, I'm dating myself) holds out against the Roman Empire, so do civil and engaging boards such as this guard agains the despair of the hulking opression of Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Dischord, Twitch, Snapchat, and whatever other evil wildfires spread lies, hate, and division.
I mean, hey...I come here after being away for ages, and there's Spikey, saying hello, as if he's just bought me a pint.
Be strong, people. WFMU shall keep us together.

We're old enough to know life before the social media of today. Before MySpace, Usenet and loads of BBSs, email chains et al.
The willingness to bend reality with no end only to antagonize and demonize others is a peculiar trait, that has now not just been normalized but encouraged by men calling themselves leaders, be that political, corporate or community. In any cycle, this is a watershed, the end of one era ushering a new one in. We have the choice to be the light than be swallowed by the dark.
I'd like to buy the world a pint, and a bowl of poutine too. We'd all be happy as heck!

I also saw a devastating documentary about, of all things, the story of the "Girls Gone Wild," and its founder, Joe Francis. It's a brutal mediatation on a particular mindset that views everything as currency--women in particular--and prizes many of the toxic values that we see all too often in social media (yep, Dan, I was gonna dovetail back to the subject of social media, what with being a retired librarian and all).
I hope you guys don't mind my long posts--I sincerely hope I don't sound like a deranged, caffeinated outlier who lives in a shed in the woods, as I don't live in a shed in the woods--but hanker for the old days of social media, when people exchanged ideas and kindness.
There's such a throwback feel to WFMU's boards. It reminds me of the very early days of the internet's emergence from an insular military and academic construct to a universal means of information exchange.
So...what are you guys reading, listening to, looking at, and watching?
And greetings to you in The Netherlands, Roy_Santiago!

the Lite is always shining to the cracks! good to hear sensible people. Most people are btw. But the power of information is great. Autocrats know that better than anyone. We do have to take some responsibility ourselves as the wave of BS is taking on the form of a tsunami.
Let's start buying each other some pints! I'll be in Brussels tonight

Besides the stuff I am studying for Rust and Software Engineering, I am trying to read something as well.
"Right Hand, Left Hand" by Chris McManus
"The highly sensitive person" by Elaine N. Aaron, Ph. D.
Don't mean to sound like a "__insert your fav here__" , but I've been on a path of "self-acceptance" and self-discovery for a little while now. After that I can focus on more. Like they say, to use an airplane quote: your own oxygen mask first.

It's just wonderful, wonderful depiction of what it is to live a full and rich life. You see Caro, all 88 years of him, speaking and moving and, above all, always seeking more knoweldge, more ideas.
And in Gottlieb, you see someone in his element: surrounded by the words he obviously loved to the very, very end.
It's just a great, life affirming ode to what it is to live a full and rich life. I recommend it without reservation.

What do you folks do...just pick two or three out of each show to make a note to listen to, so that it doesn't all just evaporate, leaving nothing but the occasional memory of, say, Norah Jones and Paul Anka singing "Black Hole Sun"?

Besides allowing me to go back to this playlist and quickly spot the things that stuck in my mind, is there anything else I can do with them?
Or do you just then create playists on, say, Spotify by just entering the names of them, or is there some techno secret that allow you to click a few things here, and then magically have the playlist appear on Spotify or Shazam?

I should imagine that the more I listen, the more folder I will create as I hear more separate categories and subcategories of music. It's kind of like those restaurants in Manhattan that combine the cuisines of, like, eight nations, while the place next door combines the cuisines of six of those nations, plus, like, three more that the previous restaurant doesn't.
It's going to be that way with the Spotify folders, I'm sure. Soon I'll need separate folders to separate my Swedish Death Metal Gospel Polka from the Danish Death Metal Gospel Polka (not to be confused with the subset popular in Greenland, which currently, I'm told, is full of angry screeds about Donald Trump's plans to take it over).

Grouping them by mood is a great idea, as is, I should imagine, grouping them by time, making a brief list that is sort of a time capsule of this particular point in life.
This Vanilla fudge song, for example, is my time marker of January 9, 5:55 AM EST, when Andrea celebrated her 50th birthday, and I learned a whole lot of Dutch words.
