Typical Dem crap: throwing a bone to the right that the latter will ignore. Peltier is 80 and not in great health (wonder why), so it's not as if he was going to go out much anyway. It's more like allowing him to die outside prison. Better than nothing, but still petty

Bad week here too, with some drastic anti-immigrant measures. Politicians have been playing the same racist playbook for decades, it only makes the fascists stronger (maybe that's the point for some). We're also circling here, and the self-proclaimed leader of the left is no better: the only reason he hasn't officially joined the far right is that he won't be second fiddle to anybody. There was an interesting article in last week's "Die Zeit" about how and why the working class, who suffer most from climate change, are the ones most resistant to what is needed to mitigate it, and how the right uses this to get more votes. Some interesting suggestions as to how a green transition could be structured to benefit those who suffer the most instead of the so-called "green elite".

Mitterand was no leftist, he basically revived the far-right, but he was very smart about it.

He needed them at the time, so proceeded to weaken them by giving them positions with power that he would undermine, making them complicit before they resigned, tainted nonetheless.
It was a weird time here, first peaceful transition of power in a long time, a lot of denied hopes but that came later.

Brian mentions cellphone talk heard thru a car. Reminds me of lily Tomlin joke of homeless person seeing a person on cellphone, looking up at st signs. Sez “uh, lemme see. I’m at the corner of Walk, and uh, Not Walk”. I heard this very early on when cellphones invaded our hands and ears (& now our eyes)

Thx (spkng of Matt, is there a 3-Matt rule at wfmu? That ya can’t have 3 or more djs named Matt on staff at ONE time? At my Old ccny job we had 3 zhangs (yes, from China)’and thats when *I* instituted the 3-zhang rule

The only time I went to the US (Foxboro, of all places, so Pats for life), I wasn't even eligible, but I made my former English teacher laugh so much I got in
In college one English teacher told me not to attend her class (said I'd be wasting both our times) then for finals let me choose the subject (it was supposed to be business stuff). My pick was "small town America as seen by David Lynch". Luckily, she loved Lynch, the exam was more like fan talk (in English though), and I got an A+

there were 7 Johns at my office years ago. some were Jon tho. but if you simply said "John!" a few people would turn around. we ended up saying last names or nicknames to address them individually

Usually not in France, where yourre supposed to learn Sorbonne English, a dialect spoken only there.
These teachers had lived in English speaking countries, a rarity.
I got one failing English grade in college. 3 got that this year, the other two were an American guy and an English woman, they managed to get all the grades thrown out for not passing the laugh test
