Rumours 2: The Rumours Are True | Suicide Squeeze Records | 2015 | Rumours 2: The Rumours Are True. Yes, it’s true. The Seattle two-piece has a new hit album recorded at Earwig Studio in the same style of Fleetwood Mac’s classic, replacing the copious amounts of cocaine with Gatorade and the tumultuous love affairs with trips to Arby’s. Their fourth full-length, Rumours 2 combines Beetham’s crunchy, catchy, hum-into-your-hairbrush bass tones and emotive howl with Peck’s powerful drum beats to create eleven all-out ragers that thrash around as wildly on the record as they do at their sweaty, energetic live shows. Pony Time takes the best parts of garage rock and leaves behind the bonehead bro attitude, for a sound that transcends the genre with pure, heart-swelling energy and the kind of magical chemistry that only exists between bandmates who are friends in real life—in other words, they zero in on Troggs-like hooks, Wounded Lion pop-sense, and Beat Happening’s sense of whimsy. | 0:01:37 (MP3 | Pop-up)

![]() |
Sexy World | Guided Missile | 1998 | The Yummy Fur were a Scottish indie rock band from Glasgow, formed in 1992, and disbanded 1999. The band consisted of lead singer and guitarist John McKeown and a regularly changing line-up of other musicians. McKeown has since gone on to form the band 1990s. Their name was taken from the comic book Yummy Fur by Chester Brown. After leaving the band in 1997, Lawrence Worthington would drum for both The Male Nurse and The Fall-influenced art punk band Country Teasers. Three future members of internationally successful Glasgow indie band Franz Ferdinand played in The Yummy Fur. Drummer Paul Thomson who joined the band in 1997, and multi-instrumentalist Alex Kapranos Huntley, who joined in 1998, were founder members of Franz Ferdinand, and Dino Bardot would join Franz Ferdinand as guitarist in 2017 to replace Nick McCarthy. | 0:07:59 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Apocalyptic Boom Boom! | In The Red Records | 2024 | When Des Demonas exploded onto the D.C. scene in 2015, they were a perfect band for the moment: Jagged and confrontational enough to be worthy of the District’s hardcore heritage, yet different enough to feel totally essential. The media has struggled to classify Des Demonas since they emerged. Last October, Suburbs Pod highlighted the tinges of ’60s garage rock—noting that three members have experience as drummers, which permeates their songs with a percussive sound. Freeform Portland came to a similar conclusion, describing Des Demonas as “drummers who happen to be playing organ, guitar, bass, and singing.” And District Fray Magazine invoked the weird punk of Butthole Surfers for comparison. "Jacky Cougar Abok: Hate and racism are such a complete waste of everyone’s time and energy. There was no way the Nazis or the Confederate forces were going to win. Not to say there aren’t insidious forces and systems that put poor people and minorities down, I just think there’ll never be a “master race” type in charge. The Sha La La Song
![]() |
The Sha La La Song 7" | Decca | 1965 | Marianne Evelyn Gabriel Faithfull (29 December 1946 – 30 January 2025) was an English singer and actress. She achieved popularity in the 1960s with the release of her hit single "As Tears Go By" and became one of the lead female artists during the British Invasion in the United States. Faithfull was noted for her distinctive voice; her melodic and high-registered vocals prevailed during her 1960s career, but these were altered by severe laryngitis coupled with persistent drug abuse during the 1970s, which left her voice permanently raspy, cracked and lower in pitch. This new sound was praised as "whisky soaked" by some critics and seen as having helped to capture the raw emotions expressed in Faithfull's music. | 0:23:46 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Something About April III | Linear Labs | 2025 | "Adrian Younge is the next generation of soul music. A self-taught musician and recording engineer who has dedicated his life to the study of classic soul music, Younge finds himself at the center of a new soul renaissance with a vision for pushing the boundaries of the music itself" //// "Producer, composer and Jazz is Dead co-founder Adrian Younge has announced Something About April III, the final album in his Brazilian-influenced psychedelic soul trilogy. It will be out April 18 via Linear Labs and he made it with a 30-piece orchestra. “Something About April III is the album I wanted to make when I created the first album in 2011,” Younge says. “However, I didn’t have the musical knowhow and experience to create the sound that was buried deep in my soul. Essentially, SAA III is the album that has taken me fifteen years to uncover and fully realize. From a cratediggers’ perspective, it’s the album I’ve been diggin’ for in the deepest crates of my soul. A lost album I finally found. I hope this LP resonates with you as much as it has for me.” //// The first single is “A Música Na Minha Fantasia,” the album’s opening track. Younge says, “‘A Música Na Minha Fantasia’ is one of the first songs I created for SAA III because I needed to start the album with vigor and purpose. It’s a song I love so much because it’s the first time I really heard my psychedelic Adrian Younge sound come to life with authentic Brazilian vocals in Portuguese. Particularly, I like to create the kind of sound that hip hop producers and record collectors scour the world for when looking for that perfect sample. This song is the first time I’m bringing the Adrian Younge version of that sound to Brazil.” //// Younge will take Something About April III on the road with a 10-piece mini-orchestra starting March 1 in Atlanta and running though April 5 in San Diego." https://adrianyounge.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:38:44 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

News Of The Universe | Sub Pop Records | 2024 | Released May 24, 2024. "I was in a dream, but now I can see that change is the only law.” -- With a credo adapted from science fiction author Octavia E. Butler, an album title from a collection of metaphysical poetry, and an expansion in consciousness brought on by personal crisis, guitarist and songwriter Shana Cleveland learns to embrace a changing world with unconditional love on News of the Universe, the new full-length from California rock band La Luz. -- News of the Universe is a record born of calamity, a work of dark, beautiful psychedelia reflecting Cleveland’s experience of having her world blown apart by a breast cancer diagnosis just two years after the birth of her son. It’s also a portrait of a band in flux, marking the first appearance for drummer Audrey Johnson and the final ones from longtime members bassist Lena Simon and keyboardist Alice Sandahl, whose contributions add a bittersweet edge to a record that is both elegy for an old world and cosmic road map to a strange new one. -- But is there any band in the world more suited to capturing the chaos of change in all its messy beauty than La Luz? Formed by Cleveland in 2012, La Luz is beloved for their ability to balance bedlam and bliss, each new record another fine-tuning of the band’s mix of swaggering riffs with angelic vocals borrowed from doo-wop and folk; a band so reliably great that it makes the huge step forward in confidence and sheer musicality that is News of the Universe all the more formidable. Cleveland, also a writer and painter, has developed into a truly original songwriter with her own canon of haunted psychedelia that, in recent years, has drawn upon the changing landscape around her rural California home for inspiration" https://laluz.bandcamp.com/ | 0:43:37 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Alreet? | UPP Records | 2025 | Released Jan 25. 2025: "Maverick musician and artist Edvard Graham Lewis returns with ‘Alreet?’: an exciting album of majestic, experimental pop. //// Yet, the cheery North Eastern greeting of the album’s title belies the tension and drama that lies within. Here, you’ll find visceral rhythms, warm electronics and multiple melodic layers, with words that are sometimes sung, sometimes spoken. Lewis’s deep, distinctive voice has matured into a rich baritone: portentous yet immediate - and it serves his material exceptionally well. //// Although he is perhaps best known as bassist/ vocalist/lyricist with post-punk titans Wire, Lewis’s solo work is equally powerful. Lyrically he remains one of our finest wordsmiths. His desire to edit his text to its essentials is smartly counterbalanced by an ability to seed double or triple meanings in his phraseology. Consequently, the whole enterprise is studded with lines and couplets that snare our attention with unexpected hooks and barbs. The album is co produced with Swedish songwriter, producer and musician Max Lorentz, who has worked with everyone from acclaimed composer Magnus Lindberg, to ABBA’s Agnetha Faltskog." https://edvardgrahamlewis.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:47:07 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Tzadik Records |
2021 / 2025 |
From a 2018 live performance, released in 2021, but... "Now released on its own – this recording was part of a 4-CD box set issued in 2021 – there’s a concision and huge focus on this remarkably intact and purposeful rendering of tunes from John Zorn’s mega work of hundreds of his pieces called The Bagatelles. //// It’s an exciting, very unclinical blend that involves two guitarists – Mary Halvorson, who has one of the most distinctive microtonal guitar sounds in jazz, and the M-BASE & Monk inspired Miles Okazaki, known for his work with Steve Coleman. //// There’s plenty of flow and pace thanks to Tomas Fujiwara‘s attentive drumming. The all-U.S. ensemble is completed by top double bassist Drew Gress who is also with Robin Verheyen and Billy Hart on the just out Lift-Off. //// Zorn, born 1953, as both a classical, jazz composer and ferocious improviser on saxophone himself, knows how to turn such thinking of mere-ness on its head. //// This fine small group of musicians brings his ideas to life that ignite into a punkish, avant squall that is an exhilarating life force. The quartet scale detailed ideas up to find places that only Zorn’s compositional mind really knows." |

Out of Body | Self Released | 2024 | ost-punk/no wave oddity Geo are like a sentient slot machine: whatever seems happenstance is actually by design, and the more mismatched the moving parts appear, the more their music starts to make sense. Since the Groningen quartet’s inception in 2019, they have built a framework of skeletal agit-funk, cartoonish chromatics and neoteric art punk vignettes – sketching negative spaces where chaos and cacophony can sound perplexingly catchy. Out of Body is an oblong snow globe utopia where dancing with two left feet is an actual custom. Out on Erste Theke Tontraeger on April 26, 2024 – this collection of songs constitutes material Geo have been writing and performing when they first entered the circuit. These jitterbug, birdbrained post-punk spiels are in the spirit of gung-ho deconstructionists like The Contortions, The Fall and Gang of Four. In The Bath [Various Artists] | Cosmetic Warriors & Proper Music | 2025 | In the Bath is released as a 3LP set via Cosmetic Warriors & Proper Music. Release date: January 24th. "The Lovely Eggs are a two-piece lo-fi psychedelic punk rock band from Lancaster, England. They consist of married couple Holly Ross and David Blackwell. Ross was formerly the lead singer and guitarist in the all-female band Angelica." //// Every act starts out as a cover act, trying to come to grasps with a song that touched a nerve. And almost every artist will sooner or later come back to it, adding a track to their live shows or record a full-blown all covers album. Record labels love them, because the material is already familiar and it can serve as a stopgap release when one of their acts is going through a dry spell. And then, of course, there are the compilation albums with a wide variety of musicians tackling one song each. Slap a theme upon it, and you are good to go. Whether it is worthy release or not, is up to the people who picked the songs and gave some serious thought to the running order. The sprawling 3LP In the Bath gets it right, with only a handful of clunkers. Compiled by Lush co-founder Mark Constantine it features reworkings of indie songs (and ... gasp ... the Spice Girls, Enya and Céline Dion) recorded between 1991 to 2001. His company peddles Spa products, but his love for music is real, and not only skin deep. A good cover either replicates the original, which could be boring and superfluous, or it could take the song apart and put it together again in a brand new way. On In the Bath the latter is preferred, which makes for a grand collection of familiar songs sporting a new look. Kicking off with Marry Waterson's folkified reinterpretion of Say You'll Be There (Spice Girls) the album hits the ground running. Other highlights are strings meet quirky pop Reindeer (The Knife) fun ride courtesy of singer Piney Gir, an AI Willem Burroughs retelling I Feel You (Depeche Mode), the dream pop version by Rosie Doonan of What Sound (Lamb) and the subtle sitar applied to Street Spirit (Radiohead) by Sheema Mukherjee. In the not half bad bracket there is room Near Jazz Experience's In the Bath (Lemon Jelly), with sax player Terry Edwards channeling Roxy Music's Andy Mackay, Barney Morse Brown's grasping My Heart Will Go On Céline Dion from the sugarcoated fluff of a Vegas residency and turning into a dark post-punk track that will get a thumbs up for Goths with a sense of humour. As mentioned before, a few clunkers slipped through. Music Sounds Better With You (Stardust) is a lame disco version by Jackie Oates, but it's less annoying than the original. DaDaLaLa's Stop the Rock (Apollo 440) starts with the same boogie riff from the Status Quo playbook, but gets lost into a miasma of vocal effects. Thankfully the band also recorded a commendable version of Screamager (Therapy?). | * | 1:34:06 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Brilliant! Tragic! | Cooking Vinyl | 2011 | "Brilliant! Tragic! is the fourth studio album by Art Brut, released on 23 May 2011. The album was recorded in Salem, Oregon, and was the second by the band to be produced by Frank Black, best known as the frontman of Pixies. To accompany the album, a comic book version of Brilliant! Tragic! was released at the same time. //// The track listing and release details were confirmed in early March 2011. //// Art Brut frontman Eddie Argos described Brilliant! Tragic! as his "favourite" Art Brut album, saying that it was definitely their "greatest" album so far. "Bang Bang Rock & Roll did what it said on the tin", Argos explained, "It's A Bit Complicated was a bit complicated. On Art Brut vs. Satan we had to fight Satan. This one follows the same pattern, it is a 'brilliant, tragic', record. If it was a TV show you'd define it as a dramedy." //// On the subject matter for the album, Argos said; "This time the album is more about how I think I’m psychic, songs for my funeral, the principality of Sealand and Axl Rose. Weightier topics I think. I’m also sexier now" He also comments on the band's current musical direction, stating that "with the last album we'd just remembered we were a punk band again so it was all four to the floor rock out. This time there are a few songs to let you catch your breath so when we do rock the fuck out again it hits home harder." | 1:42:00 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Volume One | Don Giovanni Records | 2021 | "The Carrboro, NC supergroup Speed Stick is an ever-evolving project among a group of friends—Ash Bowie (Polvo), Charles Chace (The Paul Swest), Laura King (Bat Fangs), and Thomas Simpson (The Love Language)—whose musical achievements reach back as far as the 1990s. But as its live shows attest, the band does not want to rehearse old accomplishments. On stage, Speed Stick wants to shatter epochs. Step into a world of thunder where lighting strikes rewire nervous systems. Ride waves with peaks that precede disquieting calms. Float in spaces where dark and light collide to set blood afire. To participate in a Speed Stick show is to enter a space of bodily and psychological endurance. Off-kilter guitar riffs shadow the raging intensity of drums; blistering drum beats dance to the feedback of guitars. //// The songs for Volume One were created in unusual fashion over the course of a year. Initially, Speed Stick only consisted of two drummers. They distributed nine studio tracks and a single live track to select musicians. The musicians’ task was simple: draw inspiration from the beats in order to create music that spreads laterally and horizontally like a rhizome. Indeed, Volume One has utterly discarded the yoke of genre by instead tethering intricate, interlocking drums to myriad creative personalities: Mac McCaughan (Superchunk), Kelley Deal (The Breeders, R. Ring), Mike Montgomery (R. Ring), Stuart McLamb (The Love Language). But no one can stop with just the album. Your ears will yearn to see the shapes of sound and your eyes will beg to taste color. For what Volume One heralds is that the supergroup Speed Stick is the super show of shows." ----- Recorded By, Mixed By – Kelley, Mike // Synth – Evan Ziporyn // Viola – Jocelyn Hach // Written-By – Kelley Deal, Mike Montgomery, R. Nobody Loves You More | 4AD | 2024 | "Nobody Loves You More is the debut solo album by the American musician Kim Deal. It was released on November 22, 2024, by 4AD... It includes contributions from her sister Kelley Deal and other former Breeders collaborators, such as Jim MacPherson and Mando Lopez, as well as Savages’ Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan, Raymond McGinley of Teenage Fanclub, and the Raconteurs’ Jack Lawrence. // The album includes over a decade's work, with its earliest songs dating back to 2011, shortly after Deal's departure from the Pixies following their Lost Cities Tour. "Are You Mine?" and "Wish I Was" were written in 2011 and released in 2013 as part of a self-released seven-inch vinyl series in 2013. Steve Albini, a frequent collaborator, recorded "A Good Time Pushed" in the final sessions at Electrical Audio in Chicago before his death in May 2024. //// Musically, Nobody Loves You More blends familiar Breeders-esque rock with surprising stylistic choices, such as bossa nova and brass instrumentation, as heard in the title track. Songs like “Disobedience” and “Big Ben Beat” evoke the energy of Breeders' classics, while others, like “Wish I Was,” reimagine earlier material with fresh arrangements. Despite its eclectic nature, the album retains Deal's style, offering both familiarity and innovation. //// The album's themes range from the deeply personal to whimsical inspirations. For instance, the poignant track “Are You Mine?” is inspired by a moment with Deal's mother, who suffered from Alzheimer's." | * | 1:47:22 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

When Broken English came out she was photographed in the same place & it was only then that we realised who she was.

Stepping over junkies in Picadilly Circus tube passages as they lay violently shivering in huge pools of snot was a regular thing. As were bomb scares. We were near Fleet St were all the press was based & they'd get letter bombs. One week in lessons we heard 3 bombs go off (angry brigade, ira & plo) & we just brushed it off. We liked the bomb scares coz we could always use them as an excuse to be late, it's weird, no one worried. The school was a 1/3 Jewish & for a while, after the Tokyo El-Al desk attack we had huge body guards with Uzi shaped bulges under their jackets standing in the front entrance lobby.
I swear to you, no one worried, it was just accepted like rain or something.
I feel I may've told these tales before.
Next time on tales from a ancient British youth, it'll be Manchester & the serial killer Colin Sutcliffe

So although there are many many many more junkies now I've not seen one withdrawing in the street in 40+ years.

Maybe the troops can rock on up, have an unopposed day out sampling the maple syrup & poutine & then go home & Trump can declare victory but everything stays the same.
Invading Canada just sounds so effing lame.
As for Greenland, the only reason to do that is coz you fear climate change is going to make much of the US uninhabitable, & he ain't going to like admitting that

Tramadol was the only one that got prescribed regularly & it got wound back fairly early & very sharply.
Coke & various 'spices' are pretty common tho.
But afaict most of the opiods aren't prescription drugs but imported criminally produced powders.
Thing is the sacklers family back in the 60s were behind the push to prescribe tranqs. And the deal they've got over the oxycotin etc is ludicrous. They need all their assets confiscating.
But there are definitely loads more homeless begging junkies & spice zombies every year now.
& some new spice batches can be extremely evident as they can cause the zombies to crash out any where often literally un the middle of the street, as opposed in a doorway etc
Some towns are much much worse than others.
Anyway props to you for trying to help

Have you dug all of yours up?
We have.
I went to a jobs fair at a building at the literal ground zero of the industrial revolution (Matthew Boulton's home) this week.
I walked back thru the ashes of empire where the great great grandchildren of the formerly colonised keep the entrepreneurial (but not the inventive) spirit of those times alive.
Its really odd looking at all the buildings with thei faded 19th century logos (even a few 18th century ones) with the firms established dates.
I wanted to take the magas down to show them what the end of empire looks like

& thanks to you both for another decent show.
And you got the Fall/Ding stuff in saving me the task of shoehorning in the obligatory fall reference
Till next time.
