I literally just finished reading War and Peace 15 minutes ago. 1358 pages, with the last 50 consisting of Tolstoy obsessively examining and critiquing 19th century schools of historiography, with the writing becoming more and more abstract and philosophical until he is almost sounding like Sartre or late Wittgenstein on the knot of language, consciousness, time, and the irresolvable antinomy of freedom and necessity.

It's not difficult until the philosophical chapters at the end. It's mostly very straightforward realist fiction --- kind of soap opera like in some ways. Lots of domestic drama between parents and children, husbands and wives, fiancées, love rivals who end up in duels, etc.
