WFMU was in the AD (Dutch Newspaper) and a Dutch song was mentioned that has only been aired on this show. They had the alt stream name wrong, but what the heck.

Now I read his real name, I'm pretty sure he was a guest lecturer Contemporary Music during my years at the music academy in Zwolle.

↳ Song: "Ameland" by "Aafke Romeijn Feat. Spinvis"
I liked this song, and was able to get a translation of the lyrics, using Genius and Google translate. Here is the translation:

Nobody lives here
Nobody stays here
Nobody keeps watch
Wear a jacket when the wind blows
Flashes in the night

Nobody hears anything
Nobody asks
When the boat sails again
Waves on the beach
Nobody has a plan

If you look closely you won't see anyone
Not even in the distance
Everything holds its breath
Straight lines in the sand
You don't see anyone
Not even in the distance
Everything holds its breath
Nobody knows about it

Someone is listening
Someone has doubts
The radio tells
It's busy somewhere
Everything comes from far away

It has rained here
Look, the dunes are silent
Everything can be different
But today this is the plan

If you look closely you won't see anyone
Not even in the distance
Everything holds its breath
Straight lines in the sand
You don't see anyone
Not even in the distance
Everything holds its breath
Nobody knows about it

'Ameland' by Aafke Romeijn is an incredibly beautiful indie pop song. It is a meticulously orchestrated song with harpsichord, strings and glockenspiel, next to a crazy synthesizer and tender clarinet played by Romeijn's husband, father, mother and sister. Oh, and including whispering vocals from Spinvis, the man who rarely collaborates with other Dutch pop musicians. “That had a very long run-up,” says Romeijn. 'I sent an email for the first time four years ago. He responded as he always does: very late and with subdued enthusiasm. We went for coffee once and wanted to make something together, but it just didn't happen. He had already said that he is bad at collaborations, he has little time and works chaotically and prefers to work alone. Just like me actually.'

But the contact remained, and when Romeijn was working on the album Concept M, 'Ameland' was created. 'I had already completely written the song and sung the low vocal part, but I thought: gosh, this just sounds like a Spinvis song! I sent it to ask if he wanted to sing it again, and he did.'

Thanks, David. I remember seeing a video of Aafke and Spinvis working on the the vocals in the studio, but I can't find it now.

Jan Turkenburg:

By the way, although Spinvis doesn't collaborate while creating his songs, his live performances have a variety of line-ups.

Thank you, Jan for your response. And for playing the song. I understood what Aafke meant when she said it sounded like a Spinvis song. Like some of his songs, the lyrics evoke a series of images.
