Several people next to me looked at me like, "Dude? Pick it up!" I did, and smoked it. Welnick gave me an approving smile and nod.

I can hear it in "The Heart Of Rock & Roll" and "I Want A New Drug" (which incidentally is comparable to "She's A Beauty"). Also didn't know he helped out XTC in the studio. Would explain how their sound evolved into more pop-oriented productions as they progressed into the 80's.
