I mean cigarettes -- we can call it Big Tobacco -- and its freedom to market an addictive and deadly product for massive profits and then we can conveniently say Big Oil for sacrificing the climate for profit, which led to the fires in LA, which Lynch was too weak to withstand.

"Choice" becomes a real slippery term when multi-billion-dollar industries are allowed to freely produce and advertise addictive products with only the most grudging of regulation. People choose to use smartphones and social media, which use the same addictive techniques as casinos. When the choice becomes totally socially ubiquitous and even encouraged -- to the point that choosing otherwise is deemed bizarre (trust me, I know from that!) -- it's hard to say that only personal will is involved.
Avatar 9:40am

Interesting article in the current NYRB on the ever-fascinating topic of free will. Robert Sapolsky has a new book, jumping on the bandwagon asserting that there is some sort of scientific evidence that there is no free will (which is absurd to me). The reviewer (Jessica Riskin) is pretty critical, pointing out that the science doesn't prove that at all ..

"Sapolsky speaks this “incredibly important point” ex cathedra in the name of science, even though, “yeah, no single result or scientific discipline” demonstrates it: “Put all the scientific results together, from all the relevant scientific disciplines, and there’s no room for free will.” Now, is that scientific? To claim that lots of failures to prove something add up to a definitive proof?"

Tempted to wonder how Terence McKenna might have responded - as he liked to term relentless Mechanist Materialism as outdated 19th Century thinking.
As an Astrology Enthusiast - the question of Free Will vs. Determinism is somewhat acute. Astrologer Rick Levine posits it's perhaps something like Quantum Mechanics - where position & velocity cannot be discerned @ the same time - & Observation cannot be unlinked from phenomena... Which I suppose means we're asking the Wrong Question again - one way or another...

Yeah, there's a whole strain of analytic philosophy that slobbers all over itself with this. They tend to be a scary bunch with a real streak of cryptofascism in them. They constantly want to sacrifice philosophy on the altar of science while, as you say, getting the science all wrong. But they can always find a publisher and an audience because control always sells.

Of course free will operates within some set of constraints - I can't will myself to levitate, obviously. And the interesting question to me is exactly what those constraints are and where the borders lie (and just maybe, can we move them and expand our freedom?)

hi Lariza- I love your segment so far! however the proceeding song recently came up on my Spotify and I have to say that I feel the line about Zionism and Antisemitism is offensive to me as a Jew :( I also think it’s sort of overall a very negative song that oversimplifies large political movements and does not build solidarity or complex understanding of the issues these systems present for society.

It's a riff on an old trope "Two Cows" that's been around since at least 1936

Socialism: If you have two cows, the Government takes one and gives it to your neighbor.
Communism: If you have two cows, Government takes both and then gives you some milk.
Fascism: If you have two cows, you keep the cows and give the milk to the Government; then the government sells you some milk.
New Dealism: If you have two cows, you shoot one and milk the other; then you pour the milk down the drain.
Nazism: If you have two cows, the Government shoots you and keeps the cows.
Capitalism: If you have two cows, you sell one and buy a bull.

Thank you Tim, and I would have shared my name but based on the negativity my comment was met with I think I made the right decision. Again- I love this segment, no shade to Lariza. I was just sharing that for me personally I was hurt by the song, I feel it misrepresents the reality of antisemitism and oversimplifies Zionism in a way that does not accurately reflect history (I.e. that Jews originally came from Israel and have had a sustained presence there for thousands of years and that it has been an integral part of Jewish identity for thousands of years. And that many people who live there now moved there bc they were running from violence and oppression). And maybe I am too “sheltered” and I should be less sensitive. It feels difficult for me to do that when over half my family was killed in WWII due to antisemitism and I have friends in family who live in Israel-Palestine who have to deal with the realities there, and I myself experience antisemitism in my social and professional life (I.e. like right now, so thank you for proving my point ?.) Antisemitism is a pernicious form of racism that has persisted for millenium, and has led to violence countless times all over the world. While the song might be interpreted as a jest, to many like myself these issues affect peoples lives in very real ways and should not be taken lightly. I support peace, love, freedom, and mutual dignity for all Jews, Israelis, Palestinians, Muslims, and all others living in the region affected by violence, war, and oppression by fucked up right wing governments. I do not support war or occupation ☮️🕊️❤️
