When I was a kid, there used to be a storefront in my hometown with a lava lamp in it. I would bicycle over and sit watching it for the longest time (and way before I discovered mind-altering substances). Very soothing to watch.

My hometown, Whittier, had a cool head shop in the early '70s, Hair Boutique, right across the street from my junior high (alma mater of Richard Nixon). Lava lamps, black lights, florescent posters, paraphernalia...cool place.

I have the utmost respect for Linn's turntables, and have for lo these many decades... but I avoided the temptation to experience each of their revelatory upgrade generations by buying a VPI instead of a Linn ages ago and sidestepping the bright spotlight of Linn update curiosity/envy. I tracked a few VPI updates years ago, then just ignored it all and listened to music.

I have to admit that part of my ability to leave the turntable setup as-is for years at a time stems from having decided that digital had finally gotten actually good and musical (as long as one applies the same unhinged attention to tweaky optimization to it which one would have been applying to the LP deck).

One of my favorite listening experiences was with a VPI. I was in San Diego decades ago, visiting a stereo store equipped with the flagship VPI spinning an early pressing of Kind of Blue. Never heard it better.

For a time, I ran Linn's CD player, the Karik (transport)/Numerik (DAC), to my ears the finest player at the time. Still have it, but the laser is shot.

Sitting in my front hall is a Pioneer PL300 turntable which has a significant drag-lag-warp once every several seconds. Anyone can have this li'l beauty for just $25 American dollars and a lava lamp to be named later. It's not stowed/buried because I brought it last week to a local vintage components place that bought a receiver from me a few years ago. "Maybe. Oh...direct drive? And motor trouble? Don't want it. Sorry." A guy on craigslist has a "vintage stereo wanted" posting, and he was going to buy it along the two non-working 70s cassette decks and 90s Kenwood speakers. Then HE bailed because of motor fears.
Bruised by tease and disappointment. If I was an ebay seller, I'd post just the dustcover. An object of desire for some. It's not a turntable from my own younger history -- no special attachment. But still loathe to heave it dumpward. Can make some weird thing or things from it.

Lordy, lordy, look who's hoardy.

I agree, there's a certain obsessiveness with constant updates (and, something that sounded great after your last upgrade didn't suddenly sound awful because a new, latest, greatest upgrade is available). But, suffering from Audiophilia Nervosa, I'm never completely able to avoid those feelings.
VPI doesn't quite trumpet their upgrades like Linn dose, but they do release them as well.
(my system was a killer system in 1990-1995, thinking of amp/preamp/speaker/turntable, DAC upgrades, but it's quite expensive).

There's a Brooklyn dealer, StereoBuyers, that buys used stuff, might be worth checking out...
  1:47pm
Dean:

Constant updates are Linn's business model. That was clear to me from the get-go. Once you have a Linn object, you'll have endless opportunities to upgrade it. I still don't have the top-of-the-line power supply for the 'table, but I bet it actually improves the sound.

I feel your pain, still b/p. There used to be a fun stereo store in town, Berkeley Stereo, that peddled vintage objects.

I'll never forget a series of reviews by Harry Pearson of Absolute Sound, '80s or '90s, of two Lyra cartridges. The first one determined that Lyra's then flagship was leaps and bounds beyond any cartridge heard before, a true breakthrough in analog fidelity. Fast forward a few issues and Pearson reviews the new Lyra flagship. He queries how anybody can even bear to listen to the former cartridge.

I do a lot of listening via a crappy Apple laptop, and I don't think there is such a thing as "expensive playback tastes." I believe anybody can hear important differences with gear. It's not wine tasting, though the Pearsons of the world want us to believe it is.

Bouncing around to forums on vintage audio, people were arguing about certain gear claims. Some say better cables/connectors and other discriminatingly purchased features are bullshit for any noticeable diffference, that some things become hot topics and people think they have to have them, fearful of being not aware or discriminating enough. Somebody went /s in the discussion, with a reminder about not letting your cables have too many bends in them because electrons get backed up. Someone else took it seriously enough to challenge.

There's snake oil out there for sure, but there really is gear that's better sounding than other gear. It's not alway the big bucks that gets it, though, matching gear so it's compatible can get better sound than expensive stuff not matched well.

Curiously, my current audio gear dealer is a huge advocate for good (and expensive) cable. He was also Steve Jobs' audio dealer for a time, which makes me wonder. I can't imagine Jobs appreciating anything beyond a close-and-play, but that's my bias.

But then my dealer is very down to earth, too. He loves spinning beat-up old rock 'n' roll LPs, and he has YouTube videos running in his store on the home theater rigs. They are captivating.

Saw a portion of Grammys, some nice energy and capable performances, but, yes, was the typical orgy of production whizzbammery and stage attitudes, and the whole show and biz, from a few angles, just be wwwwweird.

Used to have a record-store promo balloon for this album, matching the sleeve coloring. Who hears "The Seven Deadly Sins" and thinks "Balloons!"??

This makes me think I'd like to have heard a trio harmony number of Marianne in this period with Glynis Johns and Carol Channing.

↳ Song: "Unzucht (Lust)" by "Marianne Faithfull"
Marianne Faithfull is someone I was aware existed but somehow never happened to develop an enthusiasm for / interest in – which I assume had more to do with historical accidents of what I happened to encounter over the years combined with the quirks of my own ear than anything intrinsic to her music.

But I think it would have caught my ear if I'd stumbled across her doing Brecht/Weill back in the day.

Just been playing the reissue of Stage Fright plus a live CD. I was at the concert, they knocked me out. You really appreciate Garth's work playing live. He gives each song textures that make it sublime. Garth playing the Royal Albert Hall organ was the best, Chest Fever ofcourse.
