Always fun to discover unexpected bits when grazing trivia. The songwriter, Ewan MacColl, "made no secret of the fact that he disliked all of the cover versions of the song. His daughter-in-law wrote: "He hated all of them. He had a special section in his record collection for them, entitled 'The Chamber of Horrors'. He said that the Elvis version was like Romeo at the bottom of the Post Office Tower singing up to Juliet. And the other versions, he thought, were travesties: bludgeoning, histrionic, and lacking in grace."

Those 60-70s stars had and have longer careers than most - most of the current "stars" are short lived (meaning only a few years - if that - in the spotlight) - the older geezers often manage(d) do stay relatively popular - nobody will remember todays "stars" in a decade except a few exceptions (Swift for example).

I agree. Marianne went through some hard times. Serious hard times but that was only a small part of her life. She put out 5 more decades worth of music, movies, and writing once she was on stable ground again.

Marianne's story is often entangled with the Stones. Compare her records to the Stones' output from 1979 on. The Stones put out some good records in the time. But they pretty musch stayed static. Whereas Marriane's records continued to progress and reach new levels.

Also, Mariane add said this herself. It's looked upon noble and romantic when a male artist goes through the wringer of addiction and hard time. Who cares if they act horrendous and like a sleaze during their hard times. It's forgiven. But it's a tragedy when a woman goes through it and then she's dismissed.

Not a popular opinion here, but it should be said when doing an honest assessment of Miss Faithful. Her notoriety was based on 1. Her status as Mick Jagger's girlfriend, and later, 2. Her addictions.
Note that "talent" is not on that list.
Obviously one feels bad about her passing and her substance use disorders.
Perhaps her life (hopefully) gives hope to others struggling with personal issues (substance abuse, mental illness, etc.) but many artists have lived and suffered through such issues (i.e., James Taylor, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison, Jimi, Billie Holliday, Pete Townsend, Keith Richards, Elton John...) but the difference is with THOSE artists the first things people think about is THEIR WORK, not about their demons. There is a difference.

Hi Hughie,

Here’s one to file under completely out-of-the-blue.

On the theme of old songs, I’m curious whether you ever discovered the name of the tune you were hoping to identify in a request that you made way back in 2016 (“I’m hoping the Reggae Schoolroom brain trust can help me identify a song I’ve loved since I heard it in 1986”... www.wfmu.org...). I've yet not been able to identify it; very sorry leave you hanging!

By way of background, as of mid-October of last year, I began helping DJ Jeff Sarge by posting active playlists for his live show. I’ve also been adding playlists to archived shows that do not yet have one. It was during that process that I stumbled upon your potentially still-unfulfilled request.

So as to not sully Joe McGasko’s message board with even more extraneous stuff, please accept a message me from via the Kenzo app. – or send one to me – so we can try to solve the mystery, if it remains unsolved. Many thanks!
