I think the popularity of Sunny via school bands and even cover versions is due to the jazz chord changes in the tune. Players like to solo over the changes, and it gave an air of "sophistication" for the band directors to put in a school band setlist, to have a hit record next to all the other material. I love Bobby Hebb's original, and Wes Montgomery did a great cover too.

hey, who sang on that 'Compared to What' ? (or is it "... What?") great Gene McDaniels song. I know his son, London, who's mentioned but not by name on the back cover of a Kim Fowley album.

that's a noble pursuit! I saw some (inexpensive) replicas of Strummer's Tele complete with stickers ... I think Billy Bragg has one.

Actually three eps of Oz and two Cupids...I wouldn't mind looking at that one again. I remember it being a good show that got yanked pretty quickly. Same guy who did Veronica Mars, iZombie and Party Down

I admire your instinct. And you were lucky to have a great teacher. Mine kind of put me off the guitar, pushing me too quickly toward theory. He was very set in his ways. He taught Al DiMeola until Al went off to Berklee, and Al really got theory! So that was the teacher's MO. Teachers can make all the difference.

I was lucky and I appreciate that teacher very much. I had a similar experience as you with an old-school jazz player who I had later as a teacher who was very set in his ways, and by old school I mean he played in radio bands in the 40's. He had me playing "Satin Doll" every lesson for at least a month, one thing he said to me after I soloed over the changes to his dissatisfaction was "don't bulls**t me." And after that I was done. We just didn't connect and maybe he just wasn't a good teacher as much as I just wasn't digging what I was playing. To this day I cannot stand nor listen to the song Satin Doll haha.

Haha, wrong "outlet"...I meant opportunities within the school-sponsored bands. At least it's not like the old Beatles cartoons where they plugged the guitars directly into the wall outlets!

before this penultimate moment ends before the Marathon ... who's bought concert tix recently? Why does TM/Livenation dick us around with changing passwords, verifying ID etc. DURING the limited buying time? I lost out on some primo Neil Young seats while that went on. Settled for a lesser section.

I feel ya. My guy was into schmaltzy AM radio pop: "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me," "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden" "More." Obviously I wanted to rock. "Satin Doll" is at least a good song.

I liked Dick Tracy because it had a plot instead of gags, and felt grown up (ha ha) plus weird villains and romance with Moon Maiden and Dick Jr.

Sarah's a primo interpreter of NRBQ songs. (used to be ... in terms of quantity, Widespread Panic - oy).
This also has a great pub-rock vibe a la Elizabeth McQueen.
