Just took my dog to the vet here in Toronto. She needs an x-ray of an injured toe. The low-end cost is $500. The high-end (if she needs sedation & bloodwork pre-sedation) is $1,300. That's a lot of money...we'll pay without hesitation to help our pooch. But expensive pet med bills are a useful wakeup call for Canadians who are being led to believe their own universal health care sucks. Sure, it can be improved.
But it definitely doesn't suck.
Once-here in Toronto-1 had an MRI, CAT scan, an ER visit and a specialist visit in the same week. I handed each admissions person my health card. End of story.

I've been self-employed my entire adult life. The last time I paid for health insurance was around 2004, before my Canadian permanent residency was granted.
Back before I moved to Canada, I think my health insurance premiums were close to $500 USD per month. That's about $6,000 per year. Just for me, not a family. And that was for pretty bare bones coverage. Lots of co-payments & restrictions.
Insurance was more of a tool to help prevent bankruptcy instead of a way to maintain & improve on good health.
insurance in usa hasn't gotten any less expensive or less restrictive in the last 20 years since I moved. -See part 3

As a regular (not-filthy rich) person having lived in both countries for decades, I can say that Canada's universal health care is so much better than that below the parallel.
It's also my opinion that Canada's universal health care system is clarion evidence people are valued and deserving of basic services that cost money more so than make money.
I'm not a Canadian citizen yet, but I plan to be. I can't vote here. But if I could, I wouldn't vote for any candidate pushing healthcare privatization. If the x-ray of my poodle's smallest toe will be $500-to-$1300 at the vet today, I can only imagine what a human's MRI would cost without universal healthcare.
And to my fellow Americans: We deserve better than corporate, for-profit health care

Sadly there's been a pattern of undermining the system by under funding and continual layoffs. It's the whole "if you don't want to do something, do it badly" Thatcher-esque privitization strategy from the right. Ugh.
