Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru - Church of Kidane Mehret
Sacred music from Emahoy's self-released 1972 album of the same name (only a few copies of which are known to exist). Alongside three gorgeous piano pieces, we hear Emahoy playing harmonium and massive, droning pipe organs for the first time, illuminating entirely new sides of her composition and performance practice.
Many of these tracks were self-recorded by Emahoy in churches throughout Jerusalem, representing her most direct encounter with the ancient liturgical music of the Ethiopian Orthodox church.
