Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

I’m only here until 11, because if I miss my local news I won’t know about the barn burning down in Athens or the two-car collision on Rt 2 outside of Marshfield. One person was air-lifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center! Obviously, I would be totally in the dark on the important issues of the day.

Both Powell and the beboppers became impatient with the limitations of swing music. Both were influenced by early 20th-century composers (esp Stravinsky). But Powell became a “classical” composer, while the beboppers created a new form of jazz. Maybe a reflection of racial and cultural differences?

Yeah I think you're on to something there. Of course there were some Jewish beboppers (Red Rodney). But there are also Black jazz musicians who have turned to composition (James Newton, who in fact was a colleague of Powell's at Cal Arts).

I did come back to hear the last set. Also interesting! The earlier band/woodwind pieces sounded pretty good to me. The ones that sound typically "serial" do not. This reminds me that I have an LP (if I can find it) of his non-tonal classical music, which I will have to dig up and report on. Not that anyone needs my report! Thanks again, Peter.
