Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from April 7, 2025 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Some of these are discoveries whilst working at a used CD store in the '90s. In the case of The Blue Meanies, they were one of the first shows I ever saw as a teen, blew my mind at the time.

I feel like they got lumped into the "ska" scene at the time, but they were usually a little better than a lot of the ska going round then.

I was never sure how much traction they had outside of Chicago, but to me they weren't really very ska. I thought of it more like metal with horns a lot of the time.

I saw them on a couple ska bills when they came through, and all the ska folks I knew seemed also into them. But I liked them pretty well. I think, with the possible exception of Mr. Bungle, there weren't a lot of metal bands with horns, so I think a lot of people sort of misunderstood where they were coming from.

They played with a lot of Ska bands, but also Alkaline Trio, who were always tedious to me, but that was when "emo" was something completely different.

They were signed to MCA, but then dropped as the album came out, so their sound was pretty widely varied with each album.

↳ Arvo Zylo @4:14
GWAR is pretty good, but you have to go into it with a pretty dark sense of humor. I love the weird costumes, and their shows are legendarily gross and wild. I'm not sure of their shows these days, as I think most of the original line-up has passed on? I would need to look into it more to be sure. But I think there is still some weird version of GWAR around, even now...

Some of you might notice that I have the time notes in the playlist, which I'm deleting once I deploy the song. While I'm familiar with some of these tunes, Arvo has a tendency to create playlists that trick me often, and I miss the transitions. So I'm trying to cheat with some notes...

↳ Song: "Interstellar Soul" by "T. Rex"
T. Rex is my preferred flavor of Glam Rock, unless you count the New York Dolls, which I would then probably then say two two are my faves. Bowie never quite did it for me, and a lot of other glam rock only has a few hits. But T. Rex is nearly flawless in my opinion.
Avatar 🎸 4:25pm
Arvo Zylo:

↳ Austin Rich @4:23
I think T. Rex is unnecessarily tied to glam rock, just speaking purely in terms of structure, but aesthetically, he is somewhat quintessential for glam rock, as is Bowie. As much as I regret to mention his name, Gary Glitter is really the benchmark of glam rock for me, and a lot of the other stuff is too much muddied by blues riffs to really qualify full time as glam rock.

This band features Cher's son. This album was not released after promo copies went out. Years later, the material was released years later without this track on it, which is obviously adlibbed/improvised vocally. Found it at a used CD store.

True story: I have seen Motorhead four times, and many other assorted rock and roll shows, with my friend Cheryl. When I met her, she was merely a lawyer. Now she has been a judge for Multnomah County for many years, and teaches other Judges how to navigate the trade. Meanwhile all I can remember is how loaded we would get at the shows, and some of the things she used to yell at Lemmy. I miss that gal...

Motorhead were great, both live and recorded, but I think it was always more fun with Cheryl, who was a big fan. While I never had to do anything about it (fortunately), I've had to ask her legal advice a few times.

Austin Rich:

It has been many years since I've had to worry about FCC guidelines, and even then, I was often on after 10 PM, at stations that had Safe Harbor hours, so "regulations" were often silly anyway. But I did spend MANY years on traditional, terrestrial, daytime radio, and I still have a little bit of a pre-programed "wince" in me when I hear "traditional" profanity. It's funny, because I'm so far away from needing to worry about it, but for so long, it was THE BIGGEST CONCERN. Now: who cares?
