Favoriting The Wiggle Room: Playlist from April 8, 2025 Favoriting

A different show every week! Rotating DJs include Jon Nelson's "Sheena 'ssembly Required" (Tape Manipulations, Digital Deconstructions and Turntable Creations),
MarkTime (vintage radio airchecks), and Krys O (aka Sister Krys - WFMU alumna 1985-1991, longtime Church of the Subgenius monk. Playing cinematic ephemera, schizoid weirdos, all styles served here). Plus: surprise guests galore. (illustration courtesy of https://www.jimflora.com/)

I stayed in the SF Bay area for about 6 months in 1970. I remember KSAN and Tom Donahue. More than any particular song that we heard, I remember hearing one of Ken Nordine's ~15 minute segments. It was a bit where a person puffs or however ingests an intoxicant and the majority of the segment was the flow of thoughts the person had as they passed out. There is a huge cache of Ken Nordine on archive.org. I've yet to go through it all to see if I can find that segment.

6 days a week was common, even into the 1970s. 7 days, then probably they prerecorded one of the days
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Austin Rich:

↳ WR @8:08
Seven Days A Week seems pretty extreme to me, but not at all impossible. From what I understand: it was pretty common to have pretty long shifts, several days out of the week (Usually Mon-Fri, as there was often different programming on the weekends.) But each station was different, so maybe KYA had shifts that were EVERY day.

David Mittleman on the Drummer stream on Saturday nights uses a clip of Donahue making a comment about underground radio as part of his show intro. I knew I recognized the voice but I never bothered to ask David who it was. Hearing this confirms to my ears that it is Tom Donahue.

A really snotty woman tried to sell me her Traffic records (among other things) at work the other day. I made her an offer, but she got mad that it wasn't enough, and took them all back. I mean, Traffic is okay, but... I wasn't too sad.

To you personally or to the shop where you work?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Austin Rich:

↳ WR @8:32
The shop. I work at a used bookstore / other merchandise, and I handle all the vinyl. We sell it, and customers can sell to us for trade or cash. I try to offer fair prices, and I get it; I'm a collector! But there are some records that we all need to realize are just not as "valuable" as we wish they might be.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm

Yeah, people get mad about that. "That record is worth $300! You should give me $300 for that!" And I have to explain capitalism to them, and they get angry, and want to know who came up with this bullshit...
