Hi Kitschy Mama and folks.

That Krazy Kat illustration doesn't look like an original Herriman's work. I don't think anyone officially took over after Herriman died, so guessing it is either a homage or an illustration created for some associated product.

I think that *may* have been The Inmates' cover from the late '70s. Their "proper" version has London as their home but IIRC, they did a promotional "New York" version and maybe some other markets as well?

i was into plj in the early-mid-70s; switched to new when i got more into "aor"...but was getting thoroughly disenchanted with it by 1978. i'd discovered wfmu then but it was "undependable"! i wanted to hear rock-oriented music, for the most part (some blues, jazz and reggae) then a kid at school told me about wpix.
at this time they were playing mostly punk, new wave (not called that yet), Iggy, mc5, pretty thing, the 'elevators and all kinds of psych and garage...and their newscasts were excellent! i recorded one (onto 8-track) on columbus day, while there were big anti-nuclear protests going on, and the guys being irreverent about columbus! and airing people talking about how the cops were spraying them and all...
