I saw the Stephan Crump sextet as part of the excellent JazzShares series on Friday (see JazzShares.org). It was apparently a single long composition from his latest album, on the theme of water. There were a couple of recognizable names in the band, Patricia Brennan (vibes) and Jacob Garchik (trombone), plus Crump on bass, plus violin, viola, and trumpet. The musicians were obviously good, and it was well played, but I didn’t find the composition itself to be very interesting. It looked as if the entire thing was written out, so there were few improvisations (or perhaps they were greatly constrained). Much of the time it was a kind of atmospheric evocation of water. So, I’ve spent a lot worse Friday nights, but this was maybe the only concert in the program where I didn’t end up buying a CD at the end.

You've inspired me: I saw a quartet on Thursday at Roulette: Anthony Davis, Earl Freeman, Gerry Hemingway, and Kyle Motl. They hit some sweet spots, but I would have liked more Davis piano, and perhaps a little less Freeman atmospherics. Hemingway played the hell out of everything he brought, though I was occasionally thinking it'd be ok if he just sat in one place for a little while.

A common issue, sometimes one is overbearing, sometimes one is too withdrawn. That's where a true leader is precious. I saw Joe McPhee sit down once and it was a musical statement. I also saw him stare Brötzmann down

Trouble with some of these "legends" is that they don't listen, they go on auto-pilot at times and "improvising" just means everyone else has to go along. Evan Parker often gets there

Earlier this morning my local Pacifica station, KPFA, played Benny Goodman's recording of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. Ravishing.

I've seen Brötzmann live a number of times, including a show I count among the top five I've ever attended, his Full Blast trio at a storefront venue in Berkeley.

Also Moore and Hemingway, once at Victo when Clusone Trio performed, followed by Hemingway's group, and then the two groups joined forces.
