Listener comments!

  11:07pm
Sybil:

Is it just me, or does this show start off with a bigger bang on Tuesdays?

... aaah, it's probably me.

"The baseball project"? Oh yeah.
  11:07pm
Joe:

These boys were good, on the TV. Though I'm personally not crazy for Mr. Wynn solo.
  11:08pm
john:

Baseball project song enough to make one forget the disaster that is NY baseball this evening/season....play ball! Barring that, play 45s!
  11:10pm
Sybil:

Heh. I caught the last inning of the Red Sox - Dbacks tonight: pure pleasure.

Oh, I forgot to tell you about going to Baltimore to see (as it turned out) Manny's 501st! The high point of my year so far. (Take that as you will.)
  11:12pm
efd:

Sybil, that's awesome! A couple of my co-workers (who are Sox fans) happened to be there for the 500th!

Joe, on which TV did you see the Baseball Project?
  11:13pm
john:

For what it's worth, speaking as a Mets fan, all Sawx victories are worthy of celebration round these parts.
  11:14pm
Sybil:

... and the hits just keep on coming.

Oh, John, sincere condolences and all that. I really do like the Mets (that one little thing aside, I think you know what I mean.)
  11:14pm
Joe:

It was my TV.
  11:16pm
Joe:

Am I really the only one who caught them on Letterman on Friday? Joe Belock tipped me off. Good man, that Joe
  11:17pm
john:

Sybil,

Thanks so much for the Comforting Words. I'm far too well brought up to mention that One Little Thing in friendly company, so I shall not. Ever.

My local town radio station here in the Yankee country part of CT broadcasts Red Sox games. No idea why, but great to have available!
  11:20pm
efd:

Joe, thank you for not making me ask you which TV *program*. I, for one, missed that Letterman appearance (as well as Joe's tip).
  11:21pm
mila kunis fan:

hiya evan--in honor of his passin could you pay tribute to GEORGE CARLIN 2nite,,,may he rest in peace!!! thank you efd=)=)=)
  11:23pm
Sybil:

So, speaking of old Sox, not that we were...

Julian Tavarez was DFA'd by the Brewers and elected to go for free agency AGAIN... I hear he wants to play for the Mets. (True story, he's got a kid who lives in NYC.)
  11:24pm
efd:

mkf, I was actually thinking of that but as it turns out I will not be playing any G. Carlin for reasons I will discuss on air.
  11:24pm
Joe:

Here's the link if you wanna check it out, Ev.

Baseball Project on Letterman -
http://stevewynn.net/youtube.php?sightsound_id=222
  11:26pm
Joe:

I hope its in protest of the fact that 40 years after the "Seven Dirty Words" we still haven't made any FUCKING progress in the world of censorship.
  11:27pm
Sybil:

No George Carlin?

I was devastated when I realized Tom was wrong about the Rahsaan RToland Kirk, but now this?!
  11:27pm
efd:

it's ridiculous the Brewers can save a roster space for Gagne but not Tavarez. I would love to see him on the Mets!
  11:28pm
efd:

actually nothing to do with that, Joe.
  11:28pm
john:

Tavarez would be perfect for the Mutts. He may be the only 35 year old pitcher with an ERA of 7 they haven't signed.
  11:29pm
Sybil:

Mets - if Tavarez gets to pitch often he's the Dominican GIDP king. He'll pitch every day if you want him to. You want him, you bet.
  11:30pm
john:

I've always liked Tavarez, but I'm afraid he's in "stick a fork in him" territory. Sigh.
  11:34pm
Laurie:

Celebrity Feud was on tonight! Ice-T vs, Joan Rivers! I Ti-Faux'd it. Can't wait to watch!
  11:34pm
Sybil:

Heh, I can't believe I'm having a discussion of Julian Tavarez here.

JT is far from done. He just needs to get more innings more often. Even Yost said so (as did Francona). He's one of those pitchers who gets better when he pitches more often.

He took an inning "cold" the day he joined the Brewers and was in top form, because he had been pitching in rec ball with a neighbor.

He's not what he once was (who is?) but he could be an asset to some team that could make more regular use of him.
  11:35pm
Laurie:

No spoilers! I want to find out for myself what Coco thinks of as appropriate primetime-friendly clothing.
  11:37pm
Sybil:

Laurie!

Hail, hail, the gang's (almost) all here.
  11:39pm
john:

Sybil,

I hope you're right, because between injuries and meltdowns, any semi-warm body with a semi-live arm may end up at Shea in the next few weeks.
  11:40pm
Joe:

Yeah Ev, that Go/Black Hollies show was awesome, but I've been absolutely kicking myself in the middle of every show this week because I'm no longer eligible to win those Sonic Youth tickets. Don't drink and FMU, kids. And I apologize for being obnoxious.
  11:45pm
Sybil:

Joe - no apologies needed. It's Tuesday!

John - FWIW, I hear both the Red Sox and the Brewers wanted him to accept assignment (and with the Sox it almost happened), they just wanted him to get more innings. But Yoyo marches to his own drummer.
  11:48pm
efd:

Joe, that is a downside of recently winning tickets. But, at least you got to see the Black Hollies -- it's going to be tough to get through for these SY tix, I'm sure.
  11:48pm
john:

Sybil, I bet he was signed to a split contract, so if he accepted assignment he'd get paid very little; worth the risk of declining and getting the big league bucks elsewhere. Just a guess, though. No evidence, and I'm far too lazy to look it up tonight!
  11:48pm
efd:

one of these weeks I'm just going to do a sports call-in show, I swear.
  11:49pm
Sybil:

The lion sleeps tonight.

http://atvs.vg.no/player/?id=16995
  11:50pm
john:

Evan,

John from Greenwich on the line with a potential trade idea...
  11:51pm
Sybil:

I'd talk about baseball, but the music is distracting me...
  11:53pm
efd:

I'm sure Laurie will alert us when the lights come back on in the lions' den.
  11:56pm
joe:

I like these guys, are they playing New York?
  12:05am
Sybil:

The lion sleeps, but the cubbbies are doing what babies (as I recall) do...
  12:06am
Laurie:

The other day, the lion cubs appeared to be alone. Then one of them started meowing and meowing and meowing and crying, and Mommy appeared from somewhere behind the camera.
  12:10am
Sybil:

The cubs are intruiguing.

Don't discount Mamma, I'm saying.
  12:16am
mila kunis fan:

when will you explain why no g. carlin 2nite evan???
  12:18am
E.L.:

What about Tim Russert? Old News?
  12:19am
efd:

i only liked his early stuff.
  12:20am
efd:

Carlin explanation is coming up... it isn't really that interesting, though.
  12:20am
joe:

That makes sense. I was playing some recent Carlin for my dad, tonight, and he, who was a huuuge fan in the 70's and owns all his records from that time, was extremely turned off.

He said he sounded like a bitter old man.
  12:21am
efd:

I was talking about Russert.
  12:22am
Joe:

You're a complicated man, Davies.
  12:22am
Sybil:

If efd never explained, I'd go to my grave a happy woman.

GC was often sexist.

I feel sad saying that. But he was.
  12:23am
Joe:

I dispute that. He was sometimes patronizing, but he has to be forgiven for his age on some level. Not excused, but you've gotta keep some perspective. I'm not sure I ever heard a bit of his that I would stamp *SEXIST*

I mean, we're all a little sexist, toots.
  12:26am
Kyle:

WOOOOO!! Evan Funk Davies!!
  12:27am
Z-CRUNK:

controversy! where is it!
  12:28am
Z-CRUNK:

Why isn't the pounding system on this week?
  12:28am
Joe:

Here, this is my hands down favorite Carlin bit, which I actually discovered when some DJ had it in the mix when Billy Jam was at the Knitting Factory a few weeks ago (which was fun as hell)

Ev, you get bonus points if you use your next mic break to read the transcript, out loud.

Carlin - Modern Man
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/193273/carlin_modern_man/
  12:28am
Z-KRUNK:

I blame george carlin's corpus!
  12:29am
Rob:

I resent that. I've never been known to be sexist.
  12:33am
mila k. fan:

evan,,george was a funny mutha!!! would you agree??
  12:33am
KRUNK-A:

Bush lied and Carlin died, because 7-11 was an inside blob!
  12:47am
mkf:

g'nite all--evan thanks 4 the fun!! see u next week=)=)=)
  12:49am
Francisco Torres:

Bunker Soldiers. Oh my. Thank you for taking me back to my cyberpunk years. What's next? Thomas Dolby?
  12:49am
efd:

goodnite mkf!
  12:49am
Sybil:

omfg efd has to defend himself..
  12:52am
efd:

i'm not sure if that was an insult...
  12:56am
James and Shawn:

Hi we're James and Shawn, we think we're so cool because we have Sonic Youth tickets BUT WE'RE NOT. WE'RE ACTUALLY QUITE LAME.
  1:02am
efd:

i'm not going to mention any names, but you should be aware that the comment management system here at WFMU makes it very easy for me to tell when people post multiple comments using different names.
  1:06am
Joe:

Damn, foiled again.

However, I stand by my original hypothesis, couched in deception though it may have been.

I'm a small, petty person.
  1:12am
E.L.:

Everybody's really riled up on the comments tonight. There must have been a get together at the sports bar after the George Carlin wake.
  1:16am
Laurie:

LIGHTS ARE ON!!!!!! http://atvs.vg.no/player/?id=16995
  1:22am
efd:

phew! OK, everyone watch the lions and calm down.
  1:22am
E.L.:

My ears were buzzing for quite a few days after that Sloan show. I guess I'm not a kid anymore. The Golden Dogs were pretty fun—definitely worth a listen later in the week.
  10:16am
Allen Oldies:

Nice call on Jack & Jill. "Summer nights and city lights create an atmosphere!" You can never go wrong with Tommy Roe!
